"you look different today."
"what do you mean?" rylee laughed at carl, who was still laying in bed as she got ready.
things were working well for the two of them, they continued to be best friends who occasionally hook up. things hadn't been weird or uncomfortable at all, and though it had only been roughly a week, they were thinking they had a pretty good system down.
"i don't know you don't usually dress like that and stuff" carl shrugged, hugging a pillow.
"yeah i'm wearing brighter colors now," rylee explained, "it's supposed to put you in a better mood or something."
"you been in bad moods lately?"
rylee shrugged, pulling her hair up into a loose bun, "i'm just kind of sick of being sad and doing drugs all the time, so i'm gonna stop and do things to make me happy i guess."
"oh sweet," carl sat up and stretched, "does that mean we can't smoke pot anymore?"
"no, we can. just not every day," she explained, "i mean you can, but i'm not going to."
"cool" he pulled a t shirt on and walked to his closet for a pair of jeans. "what do you want to do today?"
"i don't care, what time do you work?"
"4. do you want to go to the pool and then go chill at the diner?"
rylee nodded, grabbing a swim suite from her drawer.
they stopped at the river on their way to the pool. rylee laid down across from carl who was leaning against a large rock, smoking a joint. rylee watched the clouds roll by as carl rambled on about how hard it is to pick up when he's out of weed now that he can't go to the bridge without running into people he used to work with.
sometimes it was hard for rylee to listen to carl tell stories while he was smoking because he always took a hit in the middle of a sentence instead of after finishing a thought.
"i mean they took," he stopped to take a hit, "all of my clothes and his car i mean i can't just have a casual chat by the bridge."
"mhm" rylee sat up on her elbows, reaching for the joint.
"i thought you weren't gonna do that anymore?" he asked, handing it to her anyway.
"i can still smoke a little bit sometimes, it's just pot." she laughed, inhaling and handing it back to carl, who finished it off and helped her up, and they walked to the pool.

"it's kinda cold in here." rylee groaned, swimming in the pool.
"yeah," carl agreed quickly, "you're looking pretty hot in that swim suite though."
"oh yeah?" she smirked
"mhm" he hummed, swimming closer and pulling her into him by the waist. she was about to say something, but didn't get a chance, because carl placed a kiss on her lips before she could get a word out.
she wrapped her arms around his neck. carl moved his hands down to her thighs so she would wrap her legs around his waist. He swam to the side of the pool, pushing her back into the wall as he deepened the kiss, but she pulled away.
"woah chill," rylee laughed, pushing him back by the chest, "were at a public pool."
"let's go home."
