4 days later, 11:33PM

"are you fucking kidding me?!" rylee mumbled, desperately trying to get her front door unlocked while standing outside in the harsh cold weather. after a few more failed attempts at turning her key, she banged on the door, even though she knew nobody was home. greeting frustrated, she turned the key extra hard, which caused it to break off, leaving the end of the key lodged in the keyhole, and her locked out.

"FUCK!" she screamed into the air, then held her head in her hands for a moment.

with no way inside and nobody else home, she was left with no options but to walk to the gallagher house. she took a deep breath and began to walk down the long street. she and carl hadn't spoken since the other night when they almost hooked up until Carl stopped it. They were in his bed, half naked when he suddenly pulled away and said "wait, we shouldn't". after that, Rylee quickly got dressed and left, and neither of them have spoken since, but she knew that he would let her stay then night anyway, seeing as she had nowhere else to go.

by the time she got to their front door, she was shivering and lightly crying because of how frustrated she was with the situation. nothing could seem to go right that day, and then to top it off she ended up locked out with a broken key. she knocked and heard someone yell "door" a few times before Lip finally opened the door.

"hey ry- oh" he said, noticing that she had been crying.

"hey. can i come in?"

"yeah, yeah," he held the door open wider for her, "you alright?" he asked, lightly rubbing her shoulder.

She nodded and he leaned toward the staircase, yelling for Carl. He came down the stairs, slowing when he realized who it was that was here for him.

"oh, uh, hey," he said awkwardly before looking up, his face softening, "hey, you been crying ry?" he pulled her into a hug, which only made her cry harder.

"hey shh, it's okay," he whispered, "you're okay, right?"

she nodded into the hug, and he adjusted so one of his arms was free, mumbling something to Lip as he walked them both up to his bedroom, rylee still hugging to his side.

"did something happen?" he asked after they got into his room, now sitting on his bed. he got no answer, so he asked "just a bad day?"

she nodded, a few seconds later sitting up and wiping the tears off of her eyes.

"can i stay here tonight?" she asked, "im kind of locked out." she explained, setting her broken key on his night stand.

"of course," he grabbed a t shirt and some shorts for her, setting them on the bed and leaving the room.

after she changed and they were both settled, they were laying in carl's bed in silence, staring at the glow in the dark star stickers on his ceiling that had been there since they were toddlers. it wasn't the usual comfortable silence they usually have though, it was almost uncomfortable.

"i'm sorry i stormed out when you stopped the other day," she finally said, breaking the silence, "i was just.. i don't know, embarrassed i guess."

"i'm sorry i stopped." he whispered, "it wasn't about you, i just.. i don't know what's going on."

"it's okay" she whispered in return.

"i love you," he mumbled, "you know that right?"

"yeah. i love you too"

they both knew that it was a platonic love. they had been telling each other that they love one another since both of them could remember. it was comforting for both of them to get that out since what happened, they were both extremely worried that it would change things for the worse, even though they know deep down that they are too close to let anything come between them, no matter what.

rylee shifted, turning on her side to rest with her head and arm on carls chest. he lightly rubbed circles on her arm as they both drifted off to sleep.
