Chapter 18

“Holy crud.” I looked over at Ryan and halfway expected him to molt or something of the sort. “You’re an alien?” suddenly the whole ship shuddered to the left. Thundering footsteps made their way to where I was. “Oh crud. Life just keeps getting better and better.” Blondie burst in followed by Tye, a dark presence next to her. The others came in with mad faces and a small amount of panic. I realized that they had also been shaken from the alarms.

I wondered what the scene must look like to them. Me, at the controls with Ryan lying on the floor. Having the alarm going off on top of that must have made me look like one of those kamikaze pilots. Blondie marched up right to my face.

“What the hell where you thinking?!” Blondie screamed at me. I folded my legs and clasped my hands in my lap in response

“Well I was thinking that I should find the auto-pilot before this thing crashes into something like you planet, Martians.”

“So you know.” Tye said.

“Really? No dip! All I had to do was look out the window and see a huge planet that is obviously not Earth.” What can I say? I spit sarcasm like fire. Yeah, sometimes it gets people with short tempers into fights with me. Then the whole ship shuddered again. On instinct, I grabbed the steering wheel and pulled it to the right.

“Is it always like this for you aliens?” I said at random.

“No” Blondie responded, looking at me as if it was my entire fault, and it is not. Maybe the self-destruct was, but I have a winning alibi on my side. The ship then lurched to the left again, and hard, too. We were all thrown to the right. Ryan rolled. Tye grabbed him under the arms so that his pretty face didn’t get all smashed up. Personally, I hoped that Tye wouldn’t save his face: he is way to dang perfect.

Then one of the big bulky machines started to tip. I guess no one had bothered to bolt them down for safety. I ran forward and held it up because, of course, one of the little kids was right next to it. She screamed in pain. Her ankle was caught underneath it and I didn’t have enough muscle to lift it up all the way. Annie rushed forward and helped me lift it the rest of the way. The girl crawled out from under the machine. Blondie wrapped the ankle in some heavy bandages while talking to her soothingly.

Tye was currently slapping Ryan’s face to make him gain sensation again, but he was having no luck. Annie and I dropped the machine on the floor.

“What was that?” we ran to the controls and sat down. Annie looked at me.

“a coffee machine, why?” A freaking coffee machine broke that little girls ankle? Was caffeine really worth it?

“Do you realize how many planets you might have been on?” Annie said to me.

“Um, Earth, dimwit.” By now we had started to look at the controls to see what the heak was the problem. Apparently, one of the wing engines got hit by a mysterious object

“Don’t you have an engineer or something on this thing?” I shouted at Annie.

“That’s what Lily was for.”

“So you wanted to kidnap her for her engineering abilities? That’s screwed up.” then the ship gave one more gigantic lurch, and both engines died.

“Well, crud! Again!” we were hurtling toward mars at a speed that was way more than 100 miles per hour

Everyone was screaming their heads off, including me. We all had grabbed onto something in anticipation of crashing into something.

“Emergency…thrusters.” Ryan managed to gasp. I looked quickly over the console and realized, hey, it’s in a different language! I can’t read crap on this!

“Crap!” Blondie reached over and jammed down a button with some mumbo-jumbo on it. We suddenly shuddered to a hover and slowly reached the rough red ground. I looked out the windshield hoping for something that made me feel at least a little bit sane. As you can expect, that never happened. Not only was I definitely on Mars, but it had rivers and lakes and even a freaking city for goodness sake!

“So…how is the weather around here?” Everybody’s face? Priceless.
