@travelerchristina asks: How do you research while writing? By that I mean, do you do it before or during when you write and how long do you spend researching things? Where do you look when you're looking things up? I was thinking about looking into historical fiction, but I'm not sure how to approach it without having too many inconsistencies.
Christina,
During the first draft I don't research much beyond the setting and/or occupations if I need to. It's during the second and third (yes THIRD) drafts that I do more research (and hope I get it right!). I use Google, friends in different professions, and an assistant who help me either look things up or make sure how I've written something is plausible. I remember while writing LETHAL, cursing cell phones--they've really made a suspense writer's job tough!
And for what it's worth, I prefer to do just enough research so that whatever I'm writing about feels realistic.
I'll try to answer another questions tomorrow.
Best,
Sandra
