In any civilized world, everyone would have a scale pointing at the level of intimacy between you and them. In any decent world, I could just ask: how close am I to losing you today? Ah. And tomorrow?
The trouble is that sometimes someone feels suddenly distant to you, and you want to ask them why, but there is no way that they can hear you, across this broad distance.
