I run into the woods, near the trail. I try to find the source of the scream, and after what seems like forever, I find it. A tall, slender girl lays on he ground and a horse stands so close to her that he might as well be standing on top of her. He begins to rear and the girl screams again.

"Whoa, boy." I say, "Steady."

He begins to calm down and I grab the halter that he's wearing. Only then do I notice the heart-shaped star on his forehead. He's a gorgeous horse. While I'm admiring the gelding, I almost forget the girl behind me. She clears her throat, causing me to spin around.

"Are you okay?" I ask. She looks at me up and down before responding.

"I had the situation handled!" She says, "I know how to handle my own horse."

I stand there for a moment, in shock. Had the situation handled? She could at least say thank you.

"Well, he was practically on top of you, so you're welcome." I respond, handing the horse over to her. I begin to walk away when tells me to wait. She shoots me an apologetic look as I turn around.

"I don't have a place to stay." she says.

"What do you mean?"

"My parents kicked me out." she explains, "I did something stupid, and Bagheera is all I have left."

I assume that Bagheera is her horse. For a second, I can feel what she feels. I know what it's like to not have a home; how it feels when your only friend is a horse. I look at her before speaking again.

"I don't know your name." I say. She sighs in relief.

"Courtney." she replies. I smile at her and gesture for her to follow me. We walk back to the barn in silence. I'm not excited to see Linda waiting for me. She crosses her arms in an attempt to look intimidating.

"Where did you go?" She asks before noticing Courtney, "Who is that?"

"That's Courtney." I say, "She needed help. She also needs a place to stay." Linda looks at Courtney and Bagheera for a few moments, deep in thought. She's not sure how to react.

"Meg--"

"What's the problem?" I ask, "It's not like you haven't taken in a homeless girl before."
