"Choo Minji."
Those were the first words I heard when I rushed to open the classroom door. I was already panting and out of breathe from running out of the car and into the classroom. All eyes were on me and they were taunting. I didn't like the attention.
"Choo Minji," the teacher called again, her eyes sternly looking at me.
"Nae?" I asked, sucking in a deep breath. My eyes caught Jeno's, and I saw the glint of worry in his eyes.
"Why are you late?" she asked. Of all teachers that had to be the first two subjects teacher, it had to be Mrs. Yoo, huh? She was a scary and strict teacher. Nobody liked her.
"I left my home late and there was a jam," I confessed. The fact that Jeno was watching this very scene made me feel nothing but embarrassed. I didn't know how to feel.
"You're late. Go stand outside until classes are over," she sternly said, pointing at the door.
I tried my best not to cry. It wasn't because I was a crybaby, but because it's a trait I regretfully posses. Turning around, I approached the door.
"Now class, take out your textbook and turn to page 34." Mrs. Yoo continued with class.
"Mrs. Yoo, I didn't bring my textbook, though?" a voice said.
I slightly turned around—in the least obvious way possible—to see who was that other one student that would be standing outside the class with me. Only, I was shocked to find out that it was Jeno who was the one who forgot to bring his textbook.
"You didn't, huh? Go stand outside! I will not accept people who didn't bring their books. It's unacceptable," Mrs. Yoo stressed out.
Instead of looking afraid or in regret, he actually looked calm. As he stood up from his seat, he walked past me—with a hint of a small smile—and out of the class through the door. I had no choice but to follow him out of the door to receive my punishment.
I placed my bag down on the floor before I glanced over to him and looked away when he cast me a glance too.
"Nice place for a date, huh?" he teased as he lifted his hands up in the air.
"Did you really forget to bring your book?" I asked, sucking in a deep breath. I didn't like the fact that I had nowhere else to run just to avoid this conversation. I could already feel myself slipping, close to saying something stupid that could embarrass myself.
"Of course," he answered with a sincere smile.
"What? Why?" I looked at him, confused.
"Because I knew you might come late."
I blinked at him. "What?"
Jeno smiled a cute smile. You know those type of smiles that resembled nothing but a billion dollar smile and it just shuts you up without even hearing an answer? He had that on. "I'll leave it to your imagination."
I looked away and zipped my lips, afraid something stupid might slip out of them. I concentrated on receiving my punishment instead of talking to him. I was too afraid. Afraid I might make my feelings obvious.
"At least you won't be lonely, right?" When I looked up from the floor, I saw his eye smile once again. It was nothing but cute, and I immediately caught myself turning away from him. He let out a chuckle at the sight. "You're really that shy, Minji?"
"Yes," I stuttered, my eyes only hitting the ground.
"It's okay. Take your time. I won't force you out of your comfort zone," he assured sweetly.
That was sweet. But I was still too shy to say anything. I nodded in return.
"This was the most we've talked. I'm happy," Jeno said, almost teasingly.
My heart was about to explode at this rate. My cheeks were starting burn red and my legs were turning into jelly. I didn't know what I could do.
He was nothing but a stranger at first. Then he slowly became someone I befriended. It felt like any typical K-drama, actually. However, this was not the case.
What would our future together be? No one could tell. Would I ever confess to him? Or will he have a girlfriend before that time? All my choices now will play a big role in the future.
At least, for now, I could enjoy my times spent with him. I might remain by his side still. The only difference that could happen is another girl taking an even special place by his side.
