I wanna start off by saying that unlike other guidebook authors, I really do not have a problem with the concept of the Slender Mansion. In fact, I love the concept of the Slender Mansion.
But I don't like what it's become.
Alot of people point out that it's unrealistic for all those psychopaths and sociopaths to live under one roof, and they'd be correct.
But this Creepypasta.
Nothing ever really makes sense, does it? So that argument is a tad bit invalid.
However, I'm not here to defend the Slender Mansion canon. In fact, I'm here to completely hammer everyone into the ground.
First of all, Slender is NOT a housemaid. He does not bake cookies, he does not take care of everyone else and he does NOT wear a pretty, pink apron.
As much as I'm aware that everyone knows this (you must know this), I still felt the need to point it out. You have no idea how this recurring cliche affects all the new fanfiction this fandom is getting.
I, among others, am living proof of what reading too many fanfictions can do to your quality of writing.
Earlier last year or the year before that, I wrote a fanfiction called Help Wanted or Maid For Hire (or something like that.)
Basically the whole concept was supposed to be that Jeff and Ben put up an advertisement for a new maid after their old one escaped. It was supposed to have Slendy, Splendy and Offendy and some teenage girl was supposed to wander into the mansion and work there and eventually fall in love with Jeff.
My point is that everything I was writing was terribly cliche. I never ACTUALLY read the Creepypastas at that point. I was just going off what the fanfictions said (which is the worst frickin thing you could ever do.)
In fact, ALOT of our new writers just go off what other fanfictions say or present as canon.
Why do you think everyone keeps saying Masky likes Cheesecake and stutters? (Because they've never actually watched Marble Hornets?) I was literally guilty of that up until last year. I still haven't finished MH, but I tried to educate myself before writing.
Also, why do you think we have so many BEN the Perverts and Jeff The Emos? Because people are taking this stuff as canon.
So, I know that we can't stop that from happening and that it can't be helped. But I just want anyone reading this to know that this stuff is not canon.
It's amusing and fun to read honestly, but it is not canon.
If you're gonna write a fanfiction, do not base it on what you read in other fanfictions. Research the Pastas on your own.
But, I diverge.
I interpret the Slender Mansion completely differently than how I used to. Now a days, I'm trying to go for a different portrayal. Not the happy, typical home of killers. But a worn down, decrypt place of death and decay.
Because in reality, that's probably how it would be.
To summarize:
Mansion= Good
What goes on inside= BadMy last point would probably be to try using other settings. Like I'm all for the mansion, but it's been used too many times already. And some authors have completely tainted its image for the rest of us so that once we use it, people automatically assume that we're all about to do the same things.
Try finding a way around the Slender Mansion. The world is big. There are other places you can use.
Until next time.
