The Thinning AU

I snapped out of my daydream and remembered everything that was going on around me. That was another thing I liked about Ellie, she always made me happy. But at feeling washed away quickly when I heard a loud buzz and the guard unlocked the door and came in. In an automated voice she said, "Test complete, stop working immediately." She walked over and grabbed my test and put it into a manila envelope. She lifted me out of my seat by my shoulders and held out her hand pointing me to the door.

A couple hours went by and I heard the school bell ring for the last period. I went to my locker and packed my bag. We normally didn't get homework on test day but I still had books to bring home. I walked out the main entrance and waited. Ellie and I didn't live close to each other but since the town is so small I normally walked her home and sometimes vice versa.

I dropped her off at her house and made my way back to mine. I went straight to the kitchen to get a snack and told my parents that I had a lot of homework and that I probably wouldn't come out of my room for a while. That was a lie. I went to my room, took a large book out of my bag, threw my bag across the room, sat down and started to read. You see, I do this thing where I will set a time or an amount of chapters to read before I stop. I normally get side tracked for a few minutes if a good song comes on or if I started to daydream. Today I read for about 3 hours and then I went on my phone. I don't have many social medias or anything like that but I do have gmail, google docs, and Skype. So I went to my gmail and I went onto the google document that Ellie and I have been working on. She was on as usual, she also loves to write and so do I but she is more persistent than I am. We talked for a while via Google docs and then we both finally had to leave. I left, took a shower and went to bed. I stayed up a couple of hours in bed and watched YouTube until I eventually got so tired I couldn't hold my eyes open, it was about 11:30 pm.

I woke up the next morning at 7am and got into my school uniform. I wore a white button up shirt with a blue tie and a pair of light colored khakis. I walked outside and walked down the road a couple of block to an unused bus stop. I saw Ellie standing under an unlighted lamp post on her phone. This was every day, she woke up earlier than me so she would wait for me o we could walk together. I walked up to her and looked over her shoulder at her phone, she was writing still. "Hey, let's go." Without looking up she followed me. She put her phone in her pocket after I assumed she finished the sentence she was on and said, "Are you exited? For the results?"
"How can I be exited that people are going to die, people have gotten 74% before and have still been killed."
"But for your self, are you exited for your results Maxy?" I hated when people called me Maxy. The only people allowed to say it are my parents and Ellie. "Well, I guess so I didn't really struggle with more than two questions so I'm pretty sure I passed. What about you?" She paused, longer than I expected but then she said, "I think I did okay too." She paused and looked at me, "Maxy." She said it and she enunciated each letter. I looked down at her because she is shorter than I am and I smiled. For the rest if the walk we talked about our books and what we planned in writing next.

We got to school and went our separate ways to our lockers. I put my books in my locker neatly and got my things for our second period class. Our first period class would turn into the results. I headed to the auditorium seeing Ellie already there with her bag saving the seat next to her for me. After a few seconds she noticed me and waved me over. I sat down next to her and we talked. The whole room was filled with chatter until Mr. Sarden walked in. The room fell to pin drop silence and everyone's eyes were glued to him as he slowly walked to the podium. He cleared his throat and said, "Welcome back students, as you know today is the results of yesterdays tests. I will read them in alphabetical order of the people that failed the tests." He cleared his throat again and started, "Mathew Arthur" the crowd gasped and we heard sobs from across the room and we saw some guards take a tall boy with red hair out of the room. In the hall we heard screaming and then in the middle of one of the screams it stopped suddenly, everyone knew that he had been zapped. But it wasn't by the gun, so he was still alive, for now.

Mr. Sarden continued with the list until he got close to mine and Ellie's last names. Ellie's is Quincy, and mine Northon. He got down to a girl with an M as the start of her last name. He continued with a boy who's last name started with an P. I sighed with relief that I was safe again. I looked at Ellie and she was exited for me to but I could see the worry in her blue eyes. I could only see it during the results when it got close and it was really visible this year. He skipped a little bit through the names and he finally said, "E- umm... Ellie Quincy." My heart dropped and I looked at her, there was already tears in her eyes. I heard the guards step coming up the bleachers toward us. She was shaking and I just sat there with my jaw dropped. Two guards walked up to her and without thinking I jumped up spread my arms out to block her. I yelled, "NO!!! There has to be a mistake!! You can't take her!!!! Check the tests again this can't be right!!!" My voice broke with tears streaming down my face. "Take me instead...." I said quietly. One guard reached his hand near his weapons belt and sternly said, "Sir, back away from the girl. Now." I looked him straight where his eyes would be behind his helmet and I screamed, "NOOO!! YOU WON'T LAY A FINGER ON HER!!!" I lifted my leg up and I kicked him with all my might. He went toppling down the bleachers. But the other male guard quickly pulled out his rod and flicked it on. He hit me with it so hard that I had no time to react and I collapsed to the floor. The last thing I saw was Ellie standing over me as guards ripped her away from me screaming and kicking. All I heard after that was white noise and then it went black.
