Matt went into the store. It had a few small clear plastic cages, with tiny furniture such as chairs and tables placed in them. Matt looked at the Tinies in the cages, noticing how they all huddled against the back wall as he walked by. Which was understandable, they were only a few inches tall. Matt, on the other hand, was a matter of feet tall.
He looked through the cages, looking for one he liked. He saw one sitting in the corner up against the walls of the plastic cage, curled up and looking down at the floor.
The Tiny had a small black shirt and blue jeans on, appeared to have short black hair, and Matt couldn't see his eyes. There was only one other Tiny in the cage with him, and the two weren't interacting.
"Hi," Matt said, crouched down so the Tinies would see his face. The Tiny sitting in the corner looked up, and Matt noticed he had classic black glasses and brown eyes. The Tiny quickly looked down again as Matt stared.
"Hey, I'm Matt," Matt tried to get the Tinies' attention. He spoke gently and smiled, trying not to scare the Tinies. The same Tiny looked up again but then looked away.
Matt called an employee and asked to buy that Tiny. The employee opened the clear cage and picked up the Tiny to put him in a smaller, empty, portable cage. The Tiny went right to the back corner, trying to stay as far from Matt as possible.
Some paperwork later, the Tiny was now officially Matt's. They didn't go home but instead went to a Tiny furniture store nearby.
At the furniture store, Matt tried to get the Tiny, who he still hadn't gotten to speak, to help him pick out furniture he liked. They got a tiny bed with blue covers, a dresser, and a lamp, which the Tiny picked using simple pointing and yes and no gestures. Matt then also found a tiny desk and chair, and the two headed home.
They got home, and Matt placed the cage on the kitchen table and opened the cage that the Tiny had been kept in all this time. The Tiny still hadn't told him his name.
"What's your name?" Matt asked. "I'm Matt," he introduced himself to the Tiny, who was still at the back corner. "I really don't want you sitting in the back corner like you're in trouble or something," Matt said. This prompted the Tiny to start getting up. Matt saw that he was about three and a half inches tall. The Tiny moved a few feet, out of the corner and sat back down. Well, baby steps are better than nothing. "Do you want to get out and see the cool new furniture we bought?" Matt asked, moving to get the bag.
The Tiny perked up at that word. We. He smiled for a moment and looked at Matt. He hesitated a bit and then started walking to the edge of the cage. When he got near the edge, he stopped.
"I'm not going to hurt you or anything," Matt said in a sincere tone. He set out the furniture on the table.
The Tiny went over to the furniture and stood on the desk, which was the highest object.
"I-I'm Nate," the Tiny pushed up his glasses.
"Nice to meet you, Nate. You know this already, but I'm Matt."
"N-nice to m-meet you, Matt," Nate said hesitantly.
Matt noticed how nervous Nate was, and decided not to pressure Nate into letting him pick him up or something like that.
"I'm only asking this because we just met, but are you more comfortable in the cage or out here?" Nate thought about this for a moment, choosing the cage. "Do you want to put your furniture in there for now? Until you're more used to the house and everything," Matt explained. Nate nodded. They placed the bed on the left wall, the dresser on the right wall the desk and chair were in the centre of the room and Matt decided to leave the lamp out until nighttime when he would try to move Nate's stuff into his bedroom.
