Doctor Morgan told Matt and Stephanie that Nate would need surgery. The humans whispered so they wouldn't wake Nate.
"When is the surgery?" Stephanie whispered. "Preferably tomorrow, early in the morning."
"What exactly are they planning on doing for the surgery?" Matt asked. "They would put him under an anaesthetic, and once the surgery is underway they would basically carefully open and clean the main sources of the poison out his stomach and make sure everything is working properly and fix anything that is potentially hurting his stomach or causing pain, and then carefully stitch his stomach back up and it would be done. He will have to stay in the hospital for recovery for a day but that would be it," Doctor Morgan explained. "When should we tell Nate?" Matt asked. "He's awake," Stephanie noticed.
Nate woke up on the big hospital bed and heard the humans whispering. "When should we tell Nate?" he heard Matt say. "He's awake," Stephanie came over to him. "How are you feeling?" "I....I don't know..." "Do you think you're going to throw up?" Nate nodded. Stephanie took him to the sink and when he was done she took him back to bed. "I'm tired," Nate yawned. "We'll be quiet," Matt told him. Nate took off his glasses and handed them to Matt, who put them on an end table.
Nate woke up some time later and couldn't see anything. Everything was blurry. "Matt?" Nate sat up. "Steph? Matt?" Nate started getting concerned. "Where are my glasses?" Nate realized. "Matt? Steph?" he called out louder. He heard the door open. "Nate?" Stephanie's voice said. Nate could tell she was walking toward him from vibrations in the ground. "Steph? W-where are you?" Nate asked.
Stephanie was let into the room by the nurse. Matt had gone to buy Nate some pajamas and to pack an overnight bag for all of them, since the nurse requested Nate stay overnight since his surgery was going to be at six in the morning. Nate was looking around the bed for something. "Nate?" Steph said quietly. "Steph? W-where are you?" "I'm right here, it's okay," she said. "I-I can't s-see..." "Oh! Here," Stephanie grabbed Nate's glasses off the table and handed them to him. He put them on and looked at Stephanie and relaxed. "You okay?" "Where's Matt?" "He went to get some stuff from home. He'll be back," Stephanie informed the Tiny. "What's he getting?" "Nothing too important. I think he just wanted to check on Skip," Stephanie knew that if she told him about the pajamas and overnight bag that he would ask why, and she did not have an answer for that.
They waited for a while until Matt showed back up. "Hey. I'm back," Matt said as he came in, putting a bag on a chair. "Hey Nate, I got you something," Matt showed Nate some hangers with blue pajamas on them. "Thanks but...why?" Nate was suspicious. Matt and Stephanie exchanged a look.
"Look, Nate, it's really dangerous to leave a human dose of poison in a Tiny because it'll just keep getting a lot worse. To get rid of this, you're going to have surgery," Matt explained calmly. "But-" "It won't take very long, and it'll just be on your stomach. They're going to do it first thing tomorrow so we're going to sleep here tonight," Matt continued. "...okay..." "Want some water?" "...yeah," Nate's mind was on the surgery now.
Nate woke up at one in the morning, unable to sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, he had nightmares about things like the surgery failing, or that thing they give you to make you sleep (he thinks it has an actual name but he doesn't know) wearing off, and all kinds of things. He looked around the room. He started getting scared when he could not see Stephanie or Matt. He repeated "Stephanie? Matt?" a few times but there was no response. Nate curled up and cried himself to sleep.
A while before six in the morning, Matt and Stephanie woke up but didn't wake Nate. If he slept through the entire thing, including going to the surgery room, it would be fine and he would wake up feeling better, they reasoned. The doctor told them that if the surgery took longer than an hour they would be informed.
Nate woke up in bed again. Did the surgery happen? Was it over? Nate looked at his stomach and noticed some stitches. It happened. Did he really sleep through the whole thing?
Matt noticed that Nate was awake. He looked at his countdown on his phone. Half an hour left before Nate was allowed water and light liquids again. Either the anaesthetic took a long time to wear off, or Nate had been genuinely sleeping. He saw Nate look at his stomach. "How are you feeling?" Matt asked quietly. Nate jumped. "I...don't know..." Nate started sitting up. Matt gently pushed him back down. "Stay lying down," Matt told him. "Okay? W-where's Steph?" "She just went to the bathroom. Do you want to go back to sleep?" Matt asked as Nate yawned. "Yeah..." "I'll be quiet," Nate handed Matt his glasses and fell asleep.
Nate woke up with his glasses on his face and in...his bed. At home. Stephanie was on the human bed a few feet away. "You awake?" She asked. He nodded. "H-how...um...what..." Nate was confused. "It's okay. You're okay. We went home," Stephanie explained. "...Matt..." "He's working on a theory. Do you want to see him?" Nate nodded. "Okay. Stay here," Stephanie walked out of the room to find Matt. She passed by Jason, who was installing Tiny ladders, pulleys, and doors, to Matt, who was on the couch. "Nate's awake and wants to see you," Stephanie told Matt. The two went back to the room. Nate let out a big sigh when he saw them. "You feeling better?" Matt asked Nate. "I am now."
