Chapter 3

Sitting on the plane I tried not to think about the fact that I was on a plane. A part of me was excited to soon be in the air. I still barely knew where we were going but I didn’t care. Near Salt Lake had to be better than here. The guys I met were nicer than most of the people I had known my whole life.

“Once we take off you have to look out the window.” Brian looked over my lap to look out the window. I really couldn’t figure him out. He was nice but seemed short with people, and reserved. Maybe that’s why I didn’t mind talking to him.

“You fly often?”

“Just a few times. I’m from Colorado so I flew from there to Utah and then there to here and now back, so, yea, three times.”

“You’re from Colorado?”

“Denver to be exact. Want to hear my story?”

“If you want to. I don’t want you to feel inclined to. It’s your personal business.”

“It’s not too tragic. My father is really sick due to a heart condition; my mother is an alcoholic because of it. I have an older brother who got lucky and was born healthy and got my mother’s affection. I on the other hand got my father’s condition. I was sick for a while and while my father was taking care of me he fell ill to the point where we thought he wasn’t going to make it. During that time my mother started drinking and told me she wished I had never been born.”

“Oh my God. That’s terrible, how could any parent say that to their child?”

“Best part? I was five. Really didn’t want to live anymore. I mean why bother right?”

“Well, I know I just met you but I’m glad you are.”

“Thanks. My girlfriend said that too. Can’t wait for you to meet her. She is in incredible.”

“May I ask? What brought you to Utah?”

“I was twelve, hated being at home, hated being yelled at for things beyond my control so I ran away. Was found by people at the Community and given a better life. It’s how I met my girl and my new family.”

“Do you ever talk to your parents?”

“My dad on occasion, let him know I’m alive.” As the plane began to move I grabbed the armrests and held my breath. I should have listened to the flight attendant so I wouldn’t have freaked out. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Brian trying not to laugh.

An hour into the air and I was gone. The view was fantastic, gorgeous, and breathtaking. It was so nice not being scared of heights so I was allowed to really enjoy this. Brian had fallen asleep a while ago and I was thinking about it. I was too nervous to sleep though. Not over the flight anymore but over what was too come. Knowing I should I closed the blind and sat back in the chair.

“Would you like a blanket or pillow sir?”

Hearing a woman I jumped and looked around until I saw her.

“Did I scare you? I’m sorry sir. I didn’t mean to. Would you like something?”

“Oh no thank you I’m okay.”

Settling back down I closed my eyes. It was still early so the sun was up but a nap sounded like a nice idea.

Feeling something touching me I opened my eyes to see Nick leaning over his seat and shaking my shoulder.

“Hey bro time to wake up. We are just about to land.”

“Already?” I didn’t think I would sleep that long. Sitting up I opened the blind to see the plane getting closer to land. Seeing the seat belt light come on Nick went back to his seat and we all buckled up. This was it. The start of my new life was going to start very soon. God I was scared. Would I be accepted? Would I still be teased and hated? What would I do if I was? By the time we landed I was shaking, visibly shaking.
