"Room 705," she repeated to herself, searching for her next lecture.
Just then, her phone buzzed.
"Turn around." - Ava
Obeying the command, she turned around and smiled, seeing Ava standing there. Her long blonde hair was pulled into braids that hung over her shoulders. As per usual, she was wearing an old band t-shirt and black leggings.
Maddie walked towards her and hugged her.
I hope I look alright, she thought to herself as she pulled away from the hug. She'd always had a thing for Ava and the way her green eyes glimmered when she ranted about the things she loved.
"Funny seeing you here," Ava joked, biting the inside of her lip. "I never pictured you as the Christian college type." She brought her purse close to her body and pulled out some gum.
Maddie stole a piece, smiling.
"Yeah... new year, new me?" She said awkwardly.
"We should hang out again sometime... to catch up." Ava flashed Maddie a smile and shoved the pack of gum back into her purse. Maddie nodded.
"Yeah, for sure. I'll text you." She hugged Ava goodbye, the smell of her Victoria's Secret perfume teasing her nostrils.
She watched as Ava pulled away from the hug and skipped off to a room down the hall.
Bringing her palm to her face, Maddie shook her head.
Why am I so awkward? she thought as she found the room she was supposed to be in and slipped into the back.
She couldn't pay attention; the thought of hanging out with Ava lingered in her mind. What would she say to her? What would they do? Most importantly, what would she wear?
Later that night, Maddie curled up under the covers, looking at her phone.
What should I say? If I just say "hey", that'd be boring, she thought.
Playfully, she typed out, "Hey. I know that this is probably useless, since there's no way possible way that'd you say yes, but... what would you say if I asked you on a date?"
She sighed and set her phone face-down on her leg.
You're so weird, Madison.
She looked at her reflection and was startled when her phone buzzed.
"I'd love to. When are you free?" - Ava
"Holy shit..." She threw her phone onto her bed. "She said yes."
She grabbed her phone and opened the text messaging app.
"I'm free on Saturday after 7." - Ava
"Alright. I'll pick you up at 8, if that works?"
"That works." - Ava
On Saturday morning, Madison got up and checked her phone for any new notifications.
"See you tonight." - Ava
She didn't text back. Instead, she spent most the day getting ready for her date. Maddie planned that they would go to eat and then come back to her house for a movie.
She walked to the closet and picked out black skinny jeans, a red and black flannel, a tan undershirt, and black Chucks. After straightening her hair, she threw on some basic makeup.
Madison grabbed her keys and checked herself out in the mirror.
Looking good, she thought to herself. Then, she walked out to the car and started driving to Ava's house.
Should I have brought flowers? she thought as she pulled into her driveway.
Maddie looked at the house as she got out, wondering which room was Ava's.
She strode up the walkway and rang the doorbell. A few moments later, a woman opened the door, greeting her warmly.
"So you're the date, huh?" The woman smiled and held out her hand. "I'm Carol, Ava's mother. It's nice to finally meet you."
Maddie shook her hand.
"Finally?" she asked.
"Oh, yes! Ava's been talking about you since she got home. I feel like I already know you." She chuckled.
Maddie blushed, and Ava walked down the stairs.
"Mom, please stop talking."
Her hair was curled loosely, and soft makeup graced her face. She was wearing a red skater dress with black heels.
"You look beautiful," Madison said, smiling idiotically.
She blushed, and then they walked out to Maddie's car.
Maddie drove them to the nearest Olive Garden and escorted Ava inside. They talked, laughed, and completely avoided talking about how they felt.
On the ride back to Maddie's apartment, Ava looked over at her.
"So, why did you ask me out?" She said bluntly. She was never one to beat around the bush.
Maddie pulled into her driveway and parked the car.
"Well... what do you think?" Maddie turned the car off and looked back at her.
"I think that, since you asked me out, we must feel the same," Ava muttered shyly, looking down at her hands.
"This is true." Madison smiled over at her.
Ava looked up and kissed Madison softly; Madison didn't hesitate to kiss back.
After a while, they both cuddled up and began to binge-watch Shameless.
They were happy.
