PROMPT: The last survivor finally heard a knock on the door

*wumpth*

The sound of the heavy metal door closing reverberated around the small room. I shivered as I take stock of my surroundings: a gray cot decorated with one pillow and a threadbare blanket was placed at one end while a small window with three vertical bars  adorned the wall facing the door.

The small dank cell had seen better days but this is certainly better than the dark places I have been during the worst days in my life.

I was distracted from my musings when the door opened and I felt myself enclosed in a tight embrace.

"Meng, Meng, you're finally here! Sabi ko na nga ba, hindi mo ako papabayaan dito. Thank you for proving me right! Alam mo namang mahal kita, di ba? At wala tayong iwanan, kagaya ng pangako natin sa isa't isa simula pa ng umpisa."

Walang iwanan. His words brought me back to the day we first met.

"Miss, excuse me? Okay ka lang ba? Kanina pa kasi kita nakitang umiiyak dyan. Eto o, panyo ko, feel free to use it," a worried voice said.

"E tanga ka rin pala noh! Nakita mo nang umiiyak, tinatanong mo kung okay lang ako? And for your information, may panyo na po ako," I look around to try and find my missing hanky. "Nandyan lang yun so please iwan mo lang ako para makapag-drama ako in peace, okay?"

The seemingly dense man pulled out a chair and sank onto it. "Miss, pasensya ka na pero ang sabi ng tatay ko, mas mabilis mawala ang sama ng loob kapag shina-share mo. Mas lalo na pag shinare mo sa di mo kilala."

"Fine. You want to hear me bitch about my problem? Then get ready to have your ears fall off," I warned, looked up and was a bit startled to find a bedimpled man with a boyish charm staring at my tear-sodden face. I mentally shrugged and chose to ignore his handsome face as I started to share my woes.

"And ayun na nga, ayaw na ng dad ko na suportahan ako sa studies ko dahil bumagsak na naman ako. I've been studying for 5 years daw for a 4-year course and ngayon magiging 6 years na daw. As if naman ginusto kong bumagsak. So paano na ngayon, di ba?!? How will I finish my studies if he freezes my funds?" I raised my arms in exasperation.

My unexpected guest sat there quietly, staring at me, probably mulling over the long and convoluted story I've just shared with him. "O? Ano na? Cat got your tongue? Sabi sayo mahirap sitwasyon ko."

He pouted his red lips and blurted out, "Why don't you try to work muna? Ipon ka muna ng pera para makapag-aral ka."

"Hello," I said as I rolled my eyes. "Nag-apply na ako and have even gone on interviews pero walang tumanggap sa akin e. Either I'm overqualified daw or I don't have the right credentials. Nakakaloka."

"Do you really want a job? Are you desperate enough to try out for any job?"

"For any LEGAL and RESPECTABLE job," I corrected.

"If you want, you can apply as my assistant. Here's my calling card and you can do research on my company if you want," he said as he handed me his card.

I stared at it for a while as confusion set in. "Teka, why are you being this nice to me? Ni hindi mo nga ako kilala yet you sat here with me, listened to my woes and now you offer me a job? Nagpapakasanto ka ba?"
