Welcome to Hell, Cadets!

Thundering footsteps came from the other side of the Wall.
Something, a Titan, was running towards the gate.
A Titan had broken through Wall Maria's gate.
It was unlike any of the other Titans, it seemed to have armor.
Vane watched in horror as it let off steam and locked its eyes directly on the boat.
He thought it was going to charge him, but it just watched as the boat drifted away.
Li looked down at Vane.
"Vane..."
"Do you think... mom is okay?" He asked, through tears.
Li had no definitive answer.
"She... she probably is..."
"Probably...?" He sniffed.
He should not have to see this. He should have been protected from seeing this.
Li wrapped Vane in a hug and the young blonde sobbed into his shoulder.
"Mom...!"
"Shh... Shh..." he said, patting his back in an attempt to calm him.
Both brothers knew that what had been lost that day would never return.
-------
Wall Rose had accepted the refugees of Wall Maria begrudgingly.
There wasn't room for the refugees in houses, often they had to stay in horse stables or storage buildings.
The harassment they received by some of the soldiers was terrible.
Just wait, Li thought to himself. Wait until I'm in the Military Police and above you assholes.
Vane often cried himself to sleep at night, he always had the glasses rims on in order to give him some comfort, refusing to let anything happen to them.
There was a growing divide between the pair, each passing day widened the gap.
Vane shrunk into himself, growing a cold exterior.
Possibly to keep his shattered heart safe.
-6 months later-
An expedition led by the Survey Corps tried to retake Wall Maria. They took all the volunteers that would be able to help.
Many of the refugees left behind speculated that it was merely a way to thin the herds of the refugees, but they dare not speak out.
Li was thirteen. He had celebrated his birthday a week ago with an ever colder Vane.
Li had signed up for the Trainee Corps.
It was now time to leave.
"Vane," Li said, approaching his brother.
"Li," he replied, taking a step back.
"I'm sorry Vane, but I don't have much time to say goodbye." Li said urgently. "I'm doing this to better our family. I'm going to join the Military Police once I graduate. It will be a better life for us."
"I understand that, but why the hell are you leaving me behind?!" Vane yelled.
"I can't take you with me, you're too young!" Li retorted.
"You're all I have left!" Vane shouted. "I'm all you have left! We're family!"
Li's anger had boiled over. He didn't want to snap, but that's exactly what happened.
"Goddammit we aren't even related!" The words felt sour as they left his mouth. "Your true parents just dropped you off on my family's doorstep! You aren't even a Kabrino! I don't know what the hell your last name is but it sure isn't mine!"
Immediately, he regretted his words.
"All this time... how long have you known...?" Vane asked in a cold tone.
"Almost eight months." Li replied.
"If you don't want me, I'll take care of myself!" He stormed off.
"Vane!"
He didn't turn around.
-2 years later-
Vane had joined the Trainee Corps, and in hopes of proving his former friend and brother wrong, he decided he ought to choose the Survey Corps.
"I am Keith Shadis! I will be overseeing your training and be your commander. You will learn to hate me. Welcome to hell!" The Commander barked. He then walked among the rows of trainees. He barked at them asking name and district of origin.
He had reached Vane's row.
"You there!" He stiffened and saluted. "What's your name?!"
"Vane Kabrino of the Shigashina District!" The surname burned his tongue on the way out.
For a moment it appeared he was going to be shouted at, but Shadis nodded and moved on.
Dinner came around eventually.
Sasha Braus was still running.
Vane watched Eren Jaeger's table as he was surrounded by people, he was partially glad that he was not bothered by them, but all the same a little jealous.
Jealousy followed him throughout the night and poked at him as he tried to sleep.
--------
The next day came.
They were training with the 3DMG.
Vane, had been rocking back and forth lightly on his 3DMG.
"Vane Kabrino what in the hell do you think you're doing?!" Shadis shouted.
"Sir, I don't see the issue," he replied slowly.
"You're acting like a child!"
"Well, what is the point in growing up if you can't be childish sometimes?"
Some other cadets looked towards them.
Shadis didn't seem to like his answer.
"Giving lip like that won't make me or your superiors like you any better." He said.
"Apologies, sir." Vane said quickly.
Shadis walked to another cadet, all eyes on Vane now were off.
Afterwards, Shadis yelled at two cadets, Eren Jaeger and a redheaded girl shorter than Captain Levi of the Survey Corps.
"Jaeger! Berlin! You both are going to redo the Maneuver Gear training!"
The redhead was walking towards Vane.
"Hey, it was funny the way you acted on the 3DMG and your response to Shadis." She said this all very quickly before he could even react. "My name is Jerrica Berlin," She extended her hand which Vane took cautiously.
She was the first person to attempt to strike up a friendship with him.
"Vane, Vane... Kabrino." He said, he attempted to make his muscles remember how to smile.
It didn't turn out exactly right, but Jerrica's bright smile told him she didn't care what his smile was like.
Later, at dinner, she sat next to me, which felt nice, almost like... Li was there again.
Not much conversation flowed between them, it was mainly Jerrica talking about Shadis and the 3DMG training as Vane listened. She did an impression of Shadis which almost made him laugh.
But as soon as she had cleared her plate, she stood up and ran out the door. Vane, was caught off guard by this and stared at the door blankly, wondering what in the hell just happened.
Then, Shadis kicked the door open and shouted at the cadets.
"Get all your sorry little asses to bed now!"
Immediately, the trainees scrambled to put away their dishes and haul ass to the quarters.
Instead of going straight to his quarters, Vane took a risk and looked for Jerrica in order to warn her.
He found her running. With some minor difficulty, he kept pace with her.
"Jerrica!" Vane said. She paused and turned as her fellow cadet coughed and attempted to catch his breath. "You might want to stop your run, Shadis is pissed... and will most likely get... even more angry when he sees... you out past curfew."
Jerrica placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Thanks for the heads up," she said.
"And... a quick question... why the hell were you running?"
"It helps me think," she shrugged. "Thanks again."
She jogged towards her sleeping quarters. Once she was out of his view, Vane began to walk towards the his.
"Damn." He muttered, climbing into his bed. "I should build up a little more muscle before the end of training."
With this thought, he slowly drifted off to sleep, wondering what the next three years would be like if this was only the end of day two.
