Some of the Survey Corps went to a facility in Wall Rose after the expedition, the others went to Stohess.
It was pretty much a day of just sitting around and doing nothing.
Around lunch time Sasha tried to assure them that she heard footsteps of Titans.
Nanaba knocked on the window.
"Is everyone here?" She asked. When no one answered except for Krista's gasp of "Nanaba?" she continued to talk assuming that everyone was there. "We have multiple Titans nearby 500 meters to the South. They're walking this way. There's no time for you to change into your uniforms. Get on horseback immediately. Sweep through and evacuate nearby houses and villages. Got that?"
"Oh..." Sasha said.
"From... the South?" Connie asked. Reiner whispered something to Bertolt.
"Sorry," Nanaba said starting to go out through the window. "But lunch is on hold until you finish your mission! Alright get going! You won't be able to sit around like idiots anymore if you end up dead!" She leapt out the window. They scrambled to get to their horses. Vane didn't like the idea of not being in uniform. It unnerved him, what if they were attacked by Titans? What would they do? Run? They got on our horses and he looked at Jerrica, who looked grim. Jerrica and Vane were part of the West Team. They first headed to the Krovla District to warn the citizens of Krovla. Which took a few hours to get there and to warn the villages around the area. By the time they got there the sun was starting to sink below the clouds. Nevertheless they wasted no time to warn people.
"The Titans have breached Wall Rose!" They shouted as they galloped around town. It felt strange to be on a horse without his 3DMG on his hips and no uniform on. Once they rode around and warned everyone he had no idea what else they were to do. The older soldiers told the citizens to evacuate to the underground city. They then lead the citizens to the underground city. Though Vane did not have the faintest idea what the it was.
"What's the underground city?" He asked.
"An Underground City under Wall Sina!" A uniformed soldier told him. "And a fail safe if Wall Rose falls." The thought of Wall Rose fallen horrified him, though it seemed to be reality.
"And after we lead everyone to the Underground?" Vane asked. The soldier shrugged.
"Zachrias said that we evacuate villages and towns and then it's open-ended from there." He said.
Good thing I'm part of the West Team. He thought. We won't run into Titans as far as I know.
"Kabrino!" A soldier shouted, jerking him from his thoughts. "Stop straying from the group!" Vane wasn't paying attention to where his horse was leading him, it decided to start to stray from the group. He guided it back.
"Sorry, sir." Vane said.
"Guard the civilians."
"Yes, sir." He lead his horse to the center of the mass of soldiers, where the civilians were. Some looked blankly ahead, some were crying, mainly the children, and many looked grim.
-------
They managed to get everyone Underground and left the rest with the Military Police. Vane was amazed by the Underground. It was easily the most protected area in the Walls, since Titans couldn't get underground.
But it seemed like a terrible place.
There was no sunlight coming through, only the light of lanterns made sight possible.
There was a Military Police soldier leading gesturing for the civilians to go down the stairs.
Vane's eyes swept over him, but then jerked back.
It couldn't be.
But it was.
He had grown taller and some stubble lined his jaw, but it was Li Kabrino.
"Kabrino, what the hell are you doing?" A soldier asked.
"Speaking with an old friend." He replied in a monotone. "I won't be long."
Li noticed him.
"Excuse me, this is the Military Police's..." he started but then his eyes widened with realization. "Vane?"
"Li." Vane said coldly.
"You're in the Survey Corps?"
"No, I stole the uniform, what the hell do you think?"
"There's no need to-" Vane drove his fist into Li's stomach.
"You left me! Five goddamn years ago! You couldn't even be bothered to write!" With each word he punched or kicked Li.
Vane could hear his superior saying something possibly important.
But he didn't care.
With a swift movement, Li pinned Vane against the wall.
"Listen, I did what I had to, and I'm sorry."
"Sorry? Sorry doesn't even begin to cut it! Do you know what I've been through? Do you know what I've seen?" Vane shouted. "I hate you!" He panted, angry tears boiled in his eyes.
"Vane, I know I can never make it up to you-"
"No! This is exactly what I wanted! I needed to tell you!" He twisted away from Li and returned to his commanding officer, who sternly told him that he shouldn't be like that and was talking about how he should show something positive of the Survey Corps.
With a crisp 'yes sir' he mounted his horse.
------
They rode off again. Luckily Vane found Jerrica this time. The two of them hadn't the slightest idea where they were going.
"What's wrong?"
"I'm fine."
"You clearly aren't." She gestured to his tears and his bruises.
He then launched into a bitter and swear filled explanation of what had happened.
She looked like she pitied him.
He sighed and then said,
"Been a nice confusing day, eh?"
Jerrica laughed.
"I shouldn't be laughing at a time like this." She said, attempting to stifle it.
"That's right, shame on you."
A brief pause.
"Can you ask them where we're going?"
"Why me?" Jerrica asked.
"Because I'm emotionally unstable." Vane replied.
"Fine." Jerrica rode ahead to a uniformed soldier. "Sir, uh, where are we going exactly?" She asked.
"We're heading towards the Eastern Defense. To help the Garrison, that is if they are still standing." The soldier told her.
"Sam..." She muttered. "Thank you." She said to the soldier and then fell back to Vane. "We're going to the Eastern Defense of the Garrison." She told him grimly.
"So we might see Sam?"
"Exactly."
-------
They were commanded to hold off the oncoming Titans. Which, if Sam were not handpicked and had his own choice, he would not be fighting these Titans. He quite liked his position on the Wall, feeling safer looking down on the Titans rather than swinging towards them. They had already lost quite a few brave soldiers. Weilman, the guy that tried to execute Eren, was in charge. He jumped off the roof barricade he was standing on and quickly dispatched of a Titan. They were supposedly getting some Survey Corps reinforcements.
He briefly wondered whether Vane would be with them.
---------
They arrived at the Eastern Defense very late into the night. They had torches by then so they could see around them, but not by much. A light moved towards them. It was a Garrison soldier.
"You arrived a bit later than expected." She said, casting a glare at them through her glasses. She was there during the Trost campaign.
Rico Brzenska.
"We know, but we had to evacuate Krovla District and other towns." The lead Survey Corps said.
"Right." Rico said.
"Sir, may we go find our friend?" Jerrica and Vane asked.
"I don't see why not, be careful." The soldier warned them and they galloped towards the defense area.
"Sam! Sam!" He shouted.
"Sam Hudden!" Jerrica screamed. A light of a torch approached them.
"Vane? Jerrica?" Sam asked from under the light of the torch. He had a slight limp and he looked exhausted. "Why the hell aren't you in uniform?"
"Well we had to run like hell and didn't have time to get our uniforms on. The whole 104th of the Survey Corps is stuck wearing our normal clothes." Vane said. "We've been around warning towns about the Titans. We just came from the District of Krovla."
"Been a damn good time." Jerrica added sarcastically.
"We've been fighting them off." Sam said. "We have a few dead, few are injured, the Titans are gone or too far away and not moving, because it's night and they don't move at night." The Survey Corps rested with the Garrison at their Defense Line.
It was a well deserved rest for both the regiments. Sam and Jerrica and Vane swapped stories.
"You want to know why I joined the Garrison?" Sam asked and they looked at him.
"Why?" We asked.
"Cause after living through Trost I knew then and there that there was no way in hell I'd be able to go outside the Walls without being scared shitless. I'm just a goddamn coward." Sam said and clenched his hand into a fist.
"Are you okay?" Vane asked.
"No. I just don't think I'm cut out for the military, not even the Garrison." Sam said gripped his knees tightly to his chest. The moon came out from behind the clouds as Jerrica and Vane tried to reassure Sam the best they could.
"It's tough being in the Survey Corps." He said. "Basically it's hell but the Wings of Freedom also are, well, freedom. No one gets to ride outside the Walls and see how beautiful it is." Together the three of them gazed up into the sky, watching the stars glitter like diamonds and the moon shone down.
"The Titans are moving, Survey Corps get behind the defense! Troops get ready!" A Garrison commanding officer shouted.
"What?" The three of them looked at each other startled.
"How can the Titans move at night?!" Vane asked.
