They landed heavily on the next roof. A Titan grabbed for them but Vane sliced through the fingers.
"We still got everyone?" He shouted.
"Yep." Jerrica said.
"Still here." Sam said giving him a thumbs up.
"Roger that." Rick said raising a sword.
"Next roof we split up!" Vans shouted as we took off again as the Titan swung a fist. As they hovered over the next roof he shouted, "Split up! Jerrica with me and Sam and Rick go the other way!" They split up. Jerrica and Vane headed towards the Wall.
"Who made you leader?" She shouted.
"You're asking that now?"
"Yes!"
"Basically I thought someone had to take charge and-- 15 meter on your left!" Vane shouted noticing a Titan walking towards them. They swerved to the side and landed on a roof. A string holding the old glasses rims flew out from under his shirt.
It didn't even look towards them as they stomped by.
"What the hell?" Jerrica asked. Suddenly Connie and Armin flew by them, shortly followed by Mikasa. "What the hell are you doing?" Jerrica shouted, but the trio was already out of earshot.
As Jerrica was distracted, he tried to stuff the glasses back under the collar of his shirt.
But she caught it in the corner of her eye.
"What's that?" She asked, walking towards him and grabbing it.
Vane made a gagging noise as the string pulled against his neck.
"Oops, sorry." She released the string.
"It's fine." He replied in a tone that implied it wasn't fine.
"What are the glasses for?"
Vane weighed his options.
"I'll tell you if we live through this." He finally said.
Vane activated his gear and jumped to the next roof.
Jerrica followed.
They then caught sight of Jean leading fellow cadets back to the armory.
It was not to rest but to take it back from the Titans were swarming it. When they got there it was nothing like they expected. Practically every Trainee was there.
But when two Titans broke one of the walls everyone fled into the adjacent room, screaming. Vane shoved Jerrica into the room with him. Jean was the only one left in the room staring in horror.
Fellow cadets urged him to leave.
Something happened for then there was an utter look of confusion on Jean's face. He looked out of the room. The Titan Armin and Connie and Mikasa were pursuing before had knocked the Titans aside. They didn't get to see anymore, for Sam appeared behind them and pulled them further into the room.
He had seemingly arrived before them. His jaw was set and he looked grim.
"There are Titans in the refueling area." He said.
"Isn't that fantastic?" Vane mumbled.
"Sure is!" Jerrica said brightly.
"I was being sarcastic."
"I know."
"You're impossible."
"Thank you."
"They're only four meters." Sam said. "So they shouldn't be that much of an issue if we can take them out."
"Without fuel?" Jerrica said.
"Where's Rick?" Vane asked.
"You rang?" Rick strode towards them.
He felt both relieved and annoyed at the sight of him.
"I thought you would be dead." He told him in a monotone.
"I love you too, Vane."
"Don't push your luck."
"Right."
-------
After Armin arrived he explained that a Rouge Titan was fighting the Titans outside. He told them about a mental plan he had that seemed like it would never work.
"We're going to have a group of us in the lift and we'll use the guns the Military Police left here to shoot the Titans in the eyes, blinding them, while others are in the rafters ready to kill the Titans. As soon as the Titans are blinded the others will leap down and kill them." There were outbursts after this plan was explained. Eventually Armin sorted everything out and Vans was handed a gun. Jerrica, Rick and Sam were shunted in the elevator along with him.
"Well if it isn't my favorite team." He said.
"We're really feelin' the love now." Sam said.
"If you don't shut up I'll stick this gun up your-" Jerrica cut him off.
"Take a deep breath and calm down."
Vane, closing his eyes, did as she said.
"Why the hell do you listen to her?" Rick and Sam asked.
"Long story." Vane grunted as the others with guns were lined up inside the lift. Soon the lift lowered the cadets down into the room.
They were given the command to prepare and not shoot until the Titans eyes were level with their guns.
The cadets quivered in their boots. Some of these monsters had eaten friends and family.
The Titans themselves had not noticed the humans that had just dropped into their midst.
One Titan paused in its slow walk.
It turned to face the lift. A smile plastered on its face.
"Steady!" Marco Bott called out.
The Titans now were focused on the humans with guns aimed at them.
Vane glanced up at those in the rafters. His heartbeat was frantic, as if it wanted out of his chest. If this didn't work, they would all die.
"Fire!" Marco screamed and in unison the soldiers fired, blinding the Titans.
The others came down from the rafters and killed them. All except for two. Sasha and Connie had screwed up, for both Titans turned around to face them.
"Sasha and Connie missed!" A fellow cadet shouted. Sure enough, one of the Titans leapt at Sasha and at the same time Mikasa swung by and killed it.
And Annie killed the one advancing on Connie.
The soldiers cheered as the Titans corpses evaporated. They refueled their 3DMG, which had been severely depleted. Afterwards they swung back to Wall Rose in retreat.
"That was quite a run, right guys?" Rick panted, he was kneeling in order to catch his breath. "I thought we were done for."
"If you run anymore you'll probably die." Vane said, not fairing much better, each shallow breath sending pin pricks up his side.
"That's nicest thing you've said to me." He pretended to blush. Vane scowled at him.
"We made it though." Jerrica said, tone suddenly serious.
"But Trost has fallen." Vane said, looking out over the city swarmed with Titans.
