The next morning Shadis had Jerrica and Eren retake their tests. Eren was steady at first but fell after about thirty seconds. He was ordered to trade belts with Thomas Wagner and when they raised him with Thomas's belt he was fine. He had succeeded in staying up with a broken belt the awe struck crowd of Trainees then shifted their attention to Jerrica, who wasn't fairing so well. She was upside down. He felt a little stir of pity but not much. The instructor lowered the grumbling and cursing Trainee to the ground. As soon as Jerrica got to her feet she punched the harness support and probably hurt her fist. She cursed again and Shadis motioned her off and told her off about her foul language.
"The man who told a Trainee they were on his 'shit list' just called someone out for swearing. Hypocrite." Vane said. Jerrica stormed off and passed him. She broke into a run. His curiosity got the better of him and he followed her trying not to make a sound. She went into a forest which made Vane even more curious he still continued to sneak behind her. She stopped at a small lake and stood in the shallow section, near the shore. He stood in the brush making as little sound as possible. Her head suddenly snapped around to look at him.
"What do you want?" Jerrica asked. He faltered under her glare.
"I uh..." Vane cleared his throat as nervous as he was. "I... I wanted to see where you were going." He stammered stepping out from behind the brush.
"Okay..." She grinned making him feel relieved. "Come over here." He was cautious as he approached her.
"Why did you want me over here? I could have easily talked to you from over there." Vane said. She then shoved him in the shallows of the cold water.
"'Cause I wanted to do that." Jerrica replied with a smile and stretched a hand out to help him up. His hair was matted to his head.
"W-w-well t-t-that's one w-way to w-wake me up." He said, teeth chattering. He gripped her hand and incase she tried to push him again, he held on tight so she'd go down with him. She tried to pull him up but slipped and fell in instead. Jerrica laughed as she sat up, soaked.
"That was fun." Vane's mouth tried to curve into a smile but fell back into it's thin line.
"Shadis'll be pissed if he finds out. Look at our uniforms."
"Oh who gives a shit? He's such an uptight guy. If he wasn't commander I'd punch him in the gut." She gave him a wicked grin.
"Everyone probably would." He said with a slight chuckle. Vane slowly inched his way out of the water and stretched out a hand to help her get out. She simply walked out herself and squeezed water out of her hair and shirt. Her kind smile switched to a glare in a millisecond.
"Tell anyone that I was enjoying this and I'll smack you." She threatened. Vans lowered his hand and busied himself with drying his clothes.
"I won't" He replied in a monotone.
"What regimen are you planning on joining, A-Armin?" Jerrica asked with a raised eyebrow.
"First off I'm not Armin. I'm Vane, Vane Kabrino, remember? We talked a little last night?" She seemed to remember, so Vane continued. "I might look like Armin but we are different, trust me." Vane said. "And I'm planning on joining the Survey Corps."
"Nice, Survey Corps... Same one I want to go into. My second choice'd be the Garrison though." She replied.
"Garrison would be a bit boring for me. I'm not going to get into the top ten so there's no way in hell I would be able to join the Military Police."
"I'd rather get eaten by a Titan than work for the King." Jerrica said angrily and punched a tree. She bit her lip to probably stop herself from screaming.
"I think you need to calm down a bit." Vane said choosing his words carefully. He immediately backed away from her incase her next fist came flying at him.
"Nah... I'm okay." She said and headed back to the cabins. "Come on, Vane." She said looking over her shoulder. He hastily followed her. Despite having been pushed into icy water Vane felt rather tired.
------------------
The next day the Trainees were learning hand to hand combat. Vane was fighting against someone whose name he didn't know. Vane charged him with the knife and he stuck out a foot to trip him. He moved to the side and turned and jabbed him in the ribs with the knife. The Trainee grunts. They traded spots.
"I'm ready when you are." He said taking a defensive position. His opponent charges and Vane moved aside. He missed him and turned his head slightly. Vane sent a kick to his leg, but pain went up Vane's leg, telling him that he hadn't kicked properly. He only hoped it wasn't twisted or broken.
Vane returned his focus to his opponent. The other trainee stumbled slightly but charged in another attack.
This time Vane was little unsteady on his feet. His opponent knocked him off his feet and he fell back. Vane cursed under his breath. The other Trainee stretches out his hand. With hesitation Vane accepts it.
"What's your name? I don't think I caught it?" He asked.
"Vane... Vane Kabrino." He said with a wince as a shot of pain ran through his back.
"I'm Sam Hudden." They shook hands. Vane was more reluctant than he was to shake hands. He saw Jerrica walk by them. Her nose was crooked and bruised.
"Who the hell was she fighting to get in such a mess?" He asked. And then Sam and Vane found themselves face to face with Shadis.
"Kabrino! Take Berlin to the infirmary!" He barked.
"Yes sir!" He lead Jerrica to the infirmary and once out of earshot of Shadis Vane asked, "Who the hell were you fighting?"
"Mikasa." She replied. "I tripped and faceplanted. I think I broke my nose."
"Well that isn't good. But it could have been worse." He said.
"I'm used to broken bones, I've already broken a total of fifty bones in my life."
"Well... Seems like you'll get over a broken nose easily."
"I've never broken my nose though." She said and sat in the infirmary when they got there. One person grabbed her nose and straightened it, then cleaned the blood off and set her nose in a bandage to heal. Jerrica screeched as her nose was fixed and Vane couldn't help but laugh at the odd bird-like sound she made.
The first of two mistakes.
"Quick and not at all painless." He said.
The second mistake.
She then punched him directly in the gut.
"Don't laugh at me or I punch you."
"Message... Received...." He said breathlessly.
"Good," and with that she gave him a peck on the cheek. Jerrica then backed away. Vane's hand moved to his cheek.
A whirl of emotions ran through his head.
To say he looked confused was an understatement, he looked like he was hit in the back of the head with a bat,
"You just... I..." his voice trailed off. Vane struggled with how to react as his cheeks became flushed with color.
"Hope I did." Jerrica chuckled lightly. "Just don't tell anyone."
His heartbeat was suddenly erratic. He opened and closed his mouth trying to speak but nothing came out of his mouth.
She smiled and ruffled his hair.
"You're kinda cute when you're like this."
"I... I..." He said trying to get his voice working again. She hugged him, probably out pf some form of pity for him.
"I'm sorry."
"No... Please... Let go..." Vane tried to push himself away. He felt a little bad knowing that he was being rude.
She let go and left.
He eventually gathered himself up and went back to Sam.
"What took you so long?"
"Complications." Vane responded. He cleared his throat and got in a defensive stance again.
------------
As he attempted to fall asleep, Vane's mind seemed to decide to focus on Jerrica's kiss and hug.
"Goddammit, she's your fellow cadet, nothing more nothing less. It means nothing. You are focused on getting through the rest of the training..." he muttered to himself.
Eventually sleep over took all senses.
