Even though I had no body issues at all, I was struggling a little bit with the idea of showing off in a crazy pool party with my new short magenta swimsuit on. The next morning, Helen encouraged me to buy it while we were at the Mall looking for some trendy trikini for her. Don't get me wrong, I loved its vivid color but the idea of leaving almost nothing to imagination freaked me out a little bit. I mean, Mark's and his friends' bodies were sculpted by the same gods and I was almost skinny as a rail.
'Why are you so freaking pale? Ain't getting sun on the skin?' Helen was putting some bronzer on her legs while I came into my bedroom 'You're hanging so much with your lame vampire girlfriend.'
'Shut up! Don't call Mindy that way. She is your friend too!' I hated when my two best friends threw shade to each other after some silly fight 'And I'm not pale!' I looked myself at the mirror behind my entrance door 'I look like a gay toothpick...'
'You are just raving.' She stood up and started to apply sunscreen on her arms 'First, Mindy is NOT my friend. I just stand her by custom and because you and Robert like her so much...' Helen stopped and stared at me with a confident expression 'And second, trust me, Mark will eat you up. You look really cute and so, so fashionable. As if your new friend, Her Majesty Pamela, had advised you...'
'Stop! I'm over with this jealousy... We'll talk about Mindy later.' And I did wanted to do so in another moment. Not only because it was too soon for the girls to calm down, but also my head was in a different place at that time. 'And... I'm really skeptical about Mark right now. I mean... he is not ready to come out yet. All his former team mates, friends and new acquaintances will be there. He's going to ignore me.'
Although I knew I was speaking rationally, my feelings thought differently. I really wanted him to introduce me to all of his friends, not to be afraid of hugging me in public or even give me our first kiss after playing some silly splashing game on the pool. But I had to bury all this dreams and desires. He was not going to do any of those things. At least, not yet.
'Really? So he is a total puss then. If he even dare to disregard you, I'll have a word with Harold about the issue...'
'No! Hel...' I shouted after I put my white plain tanktop on 'If The Pug even finds out, Mark is going to bury me alive.'
'Nonsense... He knows everything about Mark. Even this.' Helen was serious, I could tell. She took her blue stripped beach bag and put her sunglasses on. 'Let's go. Harold will be here in a few minutes.'
'Wasn't Robert picking us up?' The idea of Harold doing me a favor gave me chills. However, he was kind of dating Helen now and I had to cope with the situation trying to be nice with him. Maybe he could help me up with the Mark thing as well.
'I've told you he was already there at Mark's. Sabrina and him have to go to her mother's birthday party later, so they arrived now to enjoy the sunny afternoon and to be able to leave earlier.'
'Is she introducing Robert to her family? Really soon...' I said surprised when I hung my rucksack on my right shoulder and headed my house's front door with my friend.
'Yeah, my thoughts exactly. But, you know, he's kind of intense. I like her though.'
'Me too. She seems to be a nice girl. I'm really happy for him.' When I opened the door I could see a nice silver coupe parked in front of our main entrance. The Pug was inside, smiling in response of Helen's howl of happiness.
'C'mon Hel, Lizard! Let's go. I'm eager to jump into the pool!' He was beaming with some cool sunglasses on and a new fashionable haircut. He was struggling to let the dog resemblance behind, and it showed.
Once we get inside, he gave Helen a sweet peck and started the engine. He was a total leadfoot, so I fastened the seat belt on as soon as I could. I'm not a velocity fan at all. In fact, I had tended to avoid any kind of roller coaster back in Orlando, leaving my cousin to ride alone while we waited for him in the exit.
'Easy, Top Racer' Helen said to Harold with a wide smile on her face. I couldn't tell if she was worried or amused. I'd never seen her so radiant in my entire life.
'Calm down, pansy!' Harold replied smiling her back and then looked at me through the mirror 'No offense, bro'.
'Non taken. Don't worry' I knew people still use this kind of offensive language but I really didn't mind. Words are just words. The true intentions and actual connotations are what really matter.
'Mark told me a lot about you, Lizard. How much you have changed since mid school. Seems like you have caught on!'
'Oh. Did he say that?' I was really astonished.
'Yeah, bro. In fact, he texted me to get sure I was picking you up. If not, he was coming instead.'
I couldn't help that a broad smile invaded my face. Although I didn't know how far had Mark gone with the details of our new "relationship", I was really glad that he was at least talking about me with his best friend. Harold being friendly with me was another sign of this, but it was also due to his new crush on Helen. They looked so lovely together. The silly looks and the constant laughter were clear examples of this. Surprisingly, I had to admit that Harold was starting to grow on me. And so did Mark.
Once we arrived, Harold pressed a button on a little remote device and the garage door suddenly opened. We all jumped out of the car and started to walk towards the backyard. I recognized the black SUV as I passed through the parking space and I get even more courageous. This was my final challenge and I was completely on fire. Once outside, I could see him standing by the pool talking with two other guys, with a glass of iced lemonade in his hand and his glowing countenance taking the center of the stage. His chest was gorgeously suntanned, matching perfectly with his neon orange swimsuit and his mirrored Ray-Ban aviators.
In the past, I would totally freaked out. But in that same moment, a strange confidence invaded my body as I was ready to face this situation. My foundations were rock solid and I was really sure what I wanted. So I left the snazzy couple behind and started to walk towards him, fighting to overcome my instinctive shyness.
<<You can do it, Lizard>>
