It's late when I get home so I am confused when I enter my apartment and the lights are on. One of my good habits are making sure all the lights are off before I leave. I cautiously enter the apartment, alert of my surroundings. The TV in the living room is on but no one is in sight.
Taking out my phone, I quickly dial Alex's number then continue to look around the room. After two rings he answers. "Hey, babe. What's up?"
"Alex," I whisper. "I just got home and -"
A lump forms in my throat when a figure appears from my room. I gawk at the person who grins at me. "Madison?" Alex says worriedly. "What's going on? Talk to me."
"I'll call you back," I say softly, hanging up. "What are you doing here, Tammy?"
"I can't visit my daughter?" she asks sweetly.
Taking a shaky breath, I turn and close the door. Leaning against the door, I set my gaze on her. "Aren't you supposed to be in prison?"
"I've been out for about a year now," she pauses, shaking her head. "Can you believe it took me a year to find you little shits?"
"What do you want?" I ask, growing more irritated with each passing second.
"My kids and house back. Come home."
"I am home," I snap. "You're nothing but a low life and you're even crazier than I thought if you honestly think any of us would go back with you."
She narrows her eyes at me. "What have I ever done to you? You're just a little bitch who always got spoiled with attention."
I raise my eyebrows. "You sat there and watched while your boyfriend fucked with me," I yell. "You never tried to stop him. And you were never there for any of us. I had to drop out of school and get random jobs so the kids could have a roof over their head - not to mention all the food I also had to buy."
She shakes her head as she walks to the table and sits on it. "You act like I've done nothing for you. I took care of you kids the best I could."
I laugh humorlessly. "Now you're just talking out of your ass. All you ever cared about was yourself. A normal mother buys her children clothes and food. You only bought yourself drugs or went out and got wasted."
Before she can reply, there is a knock on the door behind me. Taking a deep breath, I push away from the door and pull it open. "Someone called with some concerns. Do you kind if we come in?" a police officer asks.
The man looks pretty young and is relatively attractive while the woman behind him is older. "Come on in," I say, allowing them to pass through.
They both take a look around the room, their eyes setting on Tammy who looks uncomfortable with their presence. "What's going on here?"
"I got home and she was here."
"What is your relationship?" he asks.
"She's my mother," I mutter. "She got out of prison a year ago and I'm pretty sure she's violating probation by being here."
Her eyes widen. "You bitch."
"Ma'am -"
Hopping of the table, she begins throwing and pushing stuff, beginning with flipping the table. The officers head for her but the male officer stops when the guest bedroom's door opens. "What's going on?" a man asks, removing the cigarette from between his lips.
He has long dark hair and a scruffy beard. Upon closer examination, I realize the cigarette is not a regular cigarette. The officer begins heading for him while the female officer tries to stop Tammy. "Break everything!" Tammy screams.
The man immediately obeys and all hell breaks loose.
What the fuck.
As the female officer tries to catch Tammy, the other officer tries to stop the man who successfully pushes my TV off of the entertainment center. Growing more angry with each passing second, I stomp over to the man and shove him as hard as I can. He stumbles back, knocking the police officer back before lunging towards me with a raised fist.
Trying to get away, I manage to avoid getting punched in the eye and instead, his fist connects with my cheek. The police officer tackles the man and they both fall onto me, causing all of my breath to leave my Madison. "Tammy?" I hear my dad yell. "Madison! Hey, get off of her!"
The police officer manages to get the guy on the floor beside me so I quickly get to my feet, noticing my dad and Alex heading towards me. I keep my head to the side, not wanting them to notice my throbbing cheek. Surely it's already bruised. Now that both police officers have them on the floor and hanfcuffed, I take a good look around the place. It's destroyed.
This is what the last name Lancaster gets you.
Moments like this are what makes me want to drink. When life gets rough, I'd like to drink my thoughts away. "Are you okay?" Alex asks softly as he moves towards me.
I hold my hand up and he stops. "Just give me a minute. I need to make a call."
"Okay," he says, confused.
I head for my bedroom, stopping in front of Tammy. "I am going to bring every charge possible against you, including the ones from my childhood. You'll be locked up for a long time."
"There are statutes of limitation, you fucking bitch. Why else would I come here?"
"We'll see."
Once I'm in my bedroom, I let out a long breath before dialing Kim's number. She answers on the thrid ring. "Madison. Is everything okay?"
"Not really," I admit. "I've had a pretty rough day."
"I'm at home alone. Want to talk about it?" she asks.
"Yeah."
Dropping on my bed, I tell her about everything that has been going on along with what I'm feeling. She asks if I have any alcoholic drinks in the house and I assure her I don't. She advises me to keep either my dad or Alex around for support.
I couldn't be more thankful for her encouraging words at this time. I'm glad I joined the group.
