It was like 45 minutes until John was supposed to pick me up, and I was almost ready. My hair was still in rollers and I still had to put on the last little bit of make-up and my dress and heels. I was glad to find some really small heels that still looked amazing with the dress. I added a little blush to my cheeks, smiling slightly at the ivory beauty in the mirror. I really didn’t look like I usually did in school so I’m wondering how all the guys will act, including Gerbil.
I checked the clock again, the time going even closer to the pickup time. I had 20 more minutes. I quickly put my dress on, then my heels. I slowly unrolled my hair, spraying it with hairspray and then fixing it by running my fingers through it to loosen the curls. I put on my choker and slowly put on my red lip stick. I looked in the mirror again, and couldn’t believe that I looked so different, but it was still me. I sprayed perfume and grabbed my clutch just as the bell rang.
I heard my dad open the door and him and my mom introducing them to John. My mom called me down and I took a deep breath. I closed my door and slowly made my way down the stairs, waiting for them to turn and notice me. My mom was the first, then my dad, then finally John, who was trying to get the corsage together. He basically had to snap his jaw back up and compose himself, making me smile a little.
“Aww, hun, you look so grown up,” mom said, hugging me lightly. “Thanks, mom.”
My dad only nodded, then gave John a stern look. “Now, I’m sure you’re a decent young man. I expect her to be home no later than 1 in the morning. If she isn’t here…well, I don’t need to explain what might happen.”
“Dad!”
“What? I finally am able to give the protective-father speech. Cut me some slack.” I groaned and grabbed John by the arm. “Alright, let’s go before they decided to get weird.”
“Be safe you two!” My mom said, as I closed the door.
John parked his car, turning it off, and taking the keys out of the ignition, looking at me.
“Nervous much?” He said, causing me to look up at him cautiously. I figured he could tell that I was by how I was gripping the dashboard handle in front of me. I just sighed and let go slowly.
“Well…not so much me nervous. Mainly it’s from me being scared shitless from your reckless driving,” I joked, feeling myself calm down a little bit. He just smiled and got out of the car. He walked over and opened the door and held a hand out to me. “The ball awaits, princess.”
I snorted sarcastically at him, and took his hand, being careful not to mess up my hair or trip on my dress getting out. I smoothed my dress down then put my hand in the crook of his arm, allowing him to walk us toward the front of the gym. Our campus always had pretty scenery, with the flower blooming drees, and whispy willows. But tonight, they were covered with lanterns and sparkling lights, kind of creating a really cool ambiance.
I looked around at everything, walking up the steps slowly, kind of dragging poor John with me as I hurriedly went to see how the gym would be decorated. I noticed a few people glancing at me and whispering, but I figured that they just didn’t recognize me at all, without my regular make-up.
I gasped and smiled at the inside of the gym. It was perfect. It had hues of purple and blues, tapestries and twinkling lights spread out everywhere. They did a great job decorating. I heard someone screech and running-clacking towards me, and I looked to the left and saw Hannah smiling big and basically almost knocked me over as she flung herself at me.
