CHAPTER ONE
She looked at me with dark, solemn eyes before her lips broke into a smile.
“Can we play a game, Evie? Please!” she begged and I couldn’t resist.
I sighed, giving in as usual.
“Alright, what do you want to play then?” she pretended to consider, but I could tell from her mischievous smile that she already had one in mind.
“Hide-and-seek!” she yelled. I smiled, and protested;
“But, you can’t play with only two people, Kiara!”
She looked put-out for a moment before her face brightened again.
“Kat, Angel and Vic will play too!”
“Oh, alright then. You’ve outsmarted me again. Where are they?”
She raced off, not even giving me a chance to see where she was going.
“Come on!” she yelled.
Winding her way through the run down cottages, she stopped at the maids’ quarters. Darting through the door, she reappeared a moment later with her three friends, and soon they were racing down the cobbled streets.
We played a wonderful game of hide-and-seek, the children all laughing to give away their hiding spots, and suddenly jumping out from behind trees to give the finder a fright.
Suddenly I heard a wailing siren; it pounded through the air, seemingly bouncing off the trees. It was a sound that was unfamiliar to me, but it still incited urgency as we hurried back to the village.
It was utter chaos, parents screaming for their children as they ran into their cellars. I knew where they were heading. Into the deep cellars, filled with provisions for winter, but they also provided the only safe place from bomb runs.
Kat and Angel had already disappeared; I was left with Kiara and Vic to take care of. I headed immediately for the nearest safe-house, noticing that already the crowds were lessening, and soon we would be refused entry, locked outside to our doom.
Mrs Coriche let us into her cellar, and not a moment too soon. Just after she had locked the door behind us the shocks of bombs began to invade the earth. I could feel those running shudders along my hands against the wall. Vic was curled up next to Kiara, who was comforting him. I could see that they were both terrified; this was the first bomb scare they had ever experienced. The only one I remember was when I was four.
After a while, they stopped, and people began emerging from the cellars and bomb-pits. Little did they know the horror that awaited them.
Buildings and homes alike were just crisped shells, smoke obscuring our vision. Kiara coughed beside me, clutching onto my hand with wide eyed fear. I kicked aside a rock and shrieked as it flipped over, revealing the gaping holes that had once been eyes.
A human skull.
Some poor unfortunate who hadn’t made it to safety in time.
Just then I was grabbed around the waist and I twisted around to see a wild looking woman clutching onto me, pressing the cold metal of a gun into the small of my back. I recognised the intricate tattoos, and realised that she was a slaver.
