The Slytherins were already completely attendant as we stepped into the Great Hall. We were late, as always. However, no one was eating yet.

We slowly walked to our usual seats and sat down. After a little while the doors of the Hall opened again and Minerva came in. Astonishingly, she carried the old stool and the Speaking Hat. Behind her walked a girl around our age with long blond hair and beautiful, wide eyes. She was really pretty, her school robes fit her nicely and the necklace she wore looked expensive.

Professor McGonagall came to a stop and motioned for the stranger girl to wait.

"You all must be surprised", Dumbledore raised his voice,"to see a new girl mid-year. Well, Daphne Greengrass's mother has unexpectedly passed away shortly before the start of the new school year and her stepmother has... made it difficult for her to get to our school."

Judging from her facial expression, Dumbledore's speech seemed to make Daphne want to disappear. I began getting angry at the principal. How could he expose her like that in front of everyone? Sometimes even the popular Dumbledore was rude. No 11-year old kid would want her family secrets spilled to her whole school.

Minerva seemed to think the same since she interfered by clearing her throat just a bit too loud.

"Well, well", Dumbledore recollected himself, looking into Daphne's eyes apologetically, "Minerva, if you'd be so kind..?" Mum waved her over to herself, made her sit on the stool and wear the Hat. A few seconds later the Speaking Hat shouted: "SLYTHERIN!"

We all started cheering and Daphne seemed relieved when she came over to our table and settled across from me.

"Hey, Draco!" "Daphne, nice to finally see you here. And congratulations, by the way. You're one of the elite now." I rolled my eyes at Draco's response. Now Blaise also talked to Daphne, which surprised me a bit on account of our usually little contact to other Slytherins: "Daphne, may I introduce you to Kathrin? No one knows Hogwarts better than her."

"Blaise", I cleared my throat,"there are other people at this school who we are friends with that we can still learn a lot from." After a quick glance at Fred and George he knew what I meant. But before he could respond, Draco interrupted again: "I wouldn't know who'd want to be friends with you. There's no Slytherin that's more pathetic that you two, you're not part of the elite and you know it!"

He grinned derisively, he once again behaved like a stupid king which coaxed a snort out of me.

"Have you never noticed that", and with that Blaise smirked winningly, "to play all those tricks on you we have to be deceitful? Like a Slytherin?" He was completely right. We were almost like the Weasley twins....

When Draco responded, his voice was as cold as ice: "Slytherins don't play tricks." And with that he turned around and started talking to one of his fat followers that I didn't even know the name of. 'Lobster' or something like that.

"You two really changed, you know?", Daphne threw in. She seemed a bit disappointed. "Back in our old days, you were inseparable. Blaise", she lowered her voice so Draco couldn't hear us, "what made you finally change your mind about that pureblood thing? your parents..."

"My parent's ideals are the same as... You-Know-Who's. I will not pointlessly hate muggle-borns just because they're not from wizard families. My best friend here", he motioned towards me, making my heart warm, "is Professor McGonagall's daughter. Well, adoptive daughter, however some Griffindors are a lot nicer than most Slytherins."

"And your parents, what do they think?"

"Oh come on. You know my parents, one more glass of wine and they don't even care anymore. They're not interested in me." He tried to shrug it off, but I knew it hurt him.

After dinner we went to our common room where Blaise, Daphne and I talked for a long time about this and that. Apparently she was really nice and also different from the others like us.

At around midnight we decided that it was time to go to sleep. But when Daphne and I opened the door to the girl's dormitory we froze in shock.
