Lance has always loved cheering. He has an unspoken bond with the sport. Correction: definitely spoken about.
His freshmen year in high school he made it to a hot-shot national cheer competition with his school's team, but they were utterly defeated when Lance accidentally dropped his flyer... twice. The first time she recovered quickly and went right back into the movements of their routine, but the second time, oh the second time. Long story short, they had to stop their whole performance and call the paramedics. It goes with out saying that Lance didn't cheer the rest of the season.
Word soon got out about this little incident and Lance's life took a turn for the worst. Boys at school would call him awful names and laugh at him, while the girls shooted daggers at his back as he would walk down the hall and spread awful rumors. On top of that, the whole team shunned him. No one talked to him, they refused to perform any stunts with him, and they blew off all of his attempts to break the ice through flirting. This carried on into his sophomore year. Now, with Lance being the only boy on the team and none of the other squad members willing to stunt with him, the coach decided that he should sit out this year, too. And so the cycle began. Wake up, go to prison (AKA school), go to practice, and go home and practice some more. Yup, that's right. Even though he ended up sitting out the rest of his high school cheering career, he kept practicing. Practice, practice, practice. He devoted his life to it. This was his passion, this is what made him keep living. But most of all, it gave him hope. His plan: finish high school, move away to college, make the cheer squad, and be totally AWESOME at it. So when the bell rang on his very last day of high school, he said, "Hasta la later, you stupid fucks" and ran out the door.
I'm finally going to college. I'm finally going to get away, he thought, but: oh shit. I have to wait till summer's over. And with that sudden realization, he made a promise to himself to work even harder over the summer. He wanted to make it. He needed to make it. And he was going to make damn sure that he did.

"Hunk. Hunk. Hunk. Hunk. Hunk. Hu--"
"Ugh, Lance. You know I love you buddy, but I just need to get my cheer bag and then I'll be ready. So stop...like, please?" Hunk said, walking to his side of him and Lance's dormitory room.
Lance pouted, but then his mouth suddenly quirked up into a smirk. "Only if you get me some garlic knots," he said mischievously.
"What? Lance, no, we need get going to cheer tryouts."Hunk replied
"Hunk. Hunk. Hunk. Hunk. Hunk. Hunk. Hu--"
"Ok, ok. We'll pick up some garlic knots on the way to the gymnasium." Hunk caved in.
"Yes! Knew I could count on you, buddy!" Lance practically launched himself out of their dorm and to Hunk's car, leaving Hunk panting, trying to catch up.
Let's back up, shall we? For Lance, summer seemed to end almost as soon as it started. The days sort of slurred together. Lance still trained, like, a lot. But every now and then he needed a break. Lance was, well, Lance. He was quite social by nature, so he would go out to dinner with his family or go to the community pool or whatever he felt like doing after his body physically would not allow him to do any more training for the day. It was fun, to say the least. It was a good get away from the stress of training and the impending start of college. But before he knew it, he was smiling eagerly in the driver seat of his papa's old truck, Big Blue, with cardboard boxes stacked and secured in the open-air trunk, waving goodbye to his abuelita, mama, papa, y hermanos, y primos y-- I think you get the point. He arrived at his college, Voltron University, a bit of a drive later, and that's where he met Hunk. Hunk was at the campus diner when he left to go to the bathroom, leaving his girlfriend Shay waiting in line so she could order for them. Lance had just walked in at this point and thought ooh a cute girl. Go get 'er, handsome. which resulted in him getting punched in the face by a massive fist. But, in the end, the misunderstanding was cleared up and, after discovering each other's passion for cheer, Hunk and Lance became best friends.
