Chapter 1
Today was Wednesday the 4th of May, 12 days till my 17th birthday. It's been a busy week like usual but I have so much to get ready for my party on Saturday. I waltzed outside with the washing and began to peg them up on the line in my front yard. Ever since my brother and sister died 2 years ago, I've been living with my parents as an only child. It's hard at first, but you get used to it pretty fast- well you have to really. My best friend Imogen lives next door to me, we see each other every single day. She's such an idiot but I love her to bits. She's the closest thing I have to a sister. Oh, and by the way, if you were wondering, my name is Mia, Mia Smith.
Usually on a Wednesday afternoon I'd be round Imogen's and we'd be doing each others make up and gossiping about the cutest boys at our college. This Wednesday however, I have other things to be doing. My party is coming up pretty quickly and I still have so much to organise as well as getting on with all the housework. Both my parents are away on a business trip in Morocco so I've been left to fend for myself. It's pretty cool actually, it means I have no curfew at the moment. Both my parents are private investigators and are away on a case at the moment, it's crazy but it means I always have money in my pocket. You won't catch me complaining.
I finished hanging out the washing and snatched up the basket ready to skip inside.
"Helllooooo Mia, get your sweet ass out here now."
I knew that voice all too well. I didn't even have to look to know it was Imogen skipping across the grass towards my gate. She's probably come to rant about the philosophy homework we got given today.
"Hiya Imo, what can I do for ya?" I crossed over the yard to the gate where she sat swinging her legs to and fro.
"Well, now I've got your attention you can come and tell me why you aren't currently sitting on my bed with me, listening to Three Days Grace and gossiping about them fine boys that started our school today."
Oops, I was wrong. I guess I forgot to tell her I wouldn't be round today.
"Oh sorry, I forgot to tell you that I can't come round today. I have other stuff I gotta do."
She jumped off the gate and came to stand right in front of me.
"Like what you idiot? You never miss our Wednesday specials."
I side stepped around her and walked to the swing under the big old oak tree in my garden.
"Have you forgotten or something that it is my party on Saturday and I still haven't finished planning it yet?"
She started jumping up and down in front of me and swinging her arms in my face.
"NOOOO!!!! OF COURSE I HAVEN'T YOU FOOL. HOW COULD I FORGET MY BEST FRIENDS BIRTHDAY?"
That had me confused. If she hadn't forgotten and she knew all along then what was she trying to hide?
"Imo, is there something you're not telling me?"
She stopped jumping and turned to face me.
"Nooooo......of course there isn't. I was just merely shocked that you'd think I would forget your birthday, that's all."
She was definitely hiding something and I was determined to find out.
"Well, as you're here now, why don't you help me to finish my party plans?"
"Ah sorry....can't....I..um...I have homework to do"
"Oh are you sure you can't help?"
"Yep, I'm sure...sorry got to go, see you tomorrow."
I watched as she sprinted back down the yard and into her house. She was definitely trying to cover something up but the question was, what?
I went up to my room with my arms full of paper and pens and sat down on my bed. It was time to finish this plan and get things ready for Saturday.
