Darkness. All that could be seen. Dark, dull, depressing darkness. The cold air and floor could be felt, and a sharp pain on the back of his head. Unable to move, Dan attempted to recollect his conscious and what happened before.

After lunch, Dan and Kayla met up outside school. It wasn't planned, they saw each other through the crowd and had moved aside to avoid any more wasted space for the other students to get out of their prison. Since the last Friday, the night Kayla texted Dan seeming worried and scared, he'd been suspicious that she was hiding something. Something to big to hide for much longer from. Then, after he learned that it was the same night May witnessed a drug deal. How Kayla reacted to the subject. And the look in her eyes when she first saw it on TV. Dan has had a feeling she had some way to do with the drug dealing. Maybe a past with drugs? A family member with a past of drugs? Maybe she was part of the drug dealing! Whatever it was, Dan wanted answers. Soon.

"So, what's up with you?" He started
"Me? What do you mean?"
"You've been acting weird. Every time something about the recent drug thing is brought up, you freeze, the look in your eyes. It freaks me out..."
Kayla tensed up, inside and out, "I-I don't know what to say...I'm sensitive to bad conversations?"
"My parents spilt up 5 months after my birth. My older brother hated me as a baby, which is the reason my middle name is named after a kids TV show. The family cat ran away to another family down the street after I was born, too. Ever since nursery, people have been scared of my eye...condition...and my childhood has always been grim. My own family are scared of it. Of me! It's not even that scary, probably just the sight...a person's eyes suddenly changing from one colour to the next..."
"I'm really sorry, Dan...but I'm not scared of you. Or it. Jared, Eden, May, they're not scared...you have us..."
"Heh, you haven't seen it. Eden's a strong guy. He's got his strength and Jared hasn't seen it either...just a video..."
"Video?"
"I went to therapy. Jared's idea. It worked a little. They videoed it all and attempted to get it to work. Turns out, I get aggressive and stronger when I'm angry. Sounds like a fairy tale, I know. But, I know what triggers it, and even though it's uncontrollable, I feel like I have control over it. People are still scared. Sometimes I feel like I'm cursed. Other times, I'm kinda proud and honoured to be so different. Depends on my mood, I guess."
"Dan..." Tears came to Kayla's eyes as she stopped walking and hugged him tightly, "I-...it must've been hard for you... your family don't hate you... it's hard to explain but I don't think they're scared of you either..."
"Heh, shoulda seen me when I first started puberty." Dan chuckled and waited for Kayla to calm down before they began walking again.

It was a good 5 minutes of silence and walking when Kayla finally sighed and spoke, "when I was 11...my dad died. At the time, I wasn't told how. My mother was crushed and everytime she looked at me...it reminded her of him. She left me alone and scared, a man found me. He took me in and until I was 14 I felt royal. He and his 'friends' treated me like a princess...but, on my 14th birthday. He introduced me to his line of work. He was a boss. Of a criminal company that deals drugs. He was known as 'Mr Falcon' throughout the company. For my 14th birthday, I was given the terrible truth. I was just a kid. I wasn't taught what was truly right or wrong. For 2 years I believed I was doing something right. The government just didn't see it. After I turned 16, I overheard a conversation. 'What if she becomes like Derick?', 'she looks enough like him. If she shows any more resemblance to him, I'll kill her myself. I'll kill her just as I killed that traitor of a father she had.' Hearing this, I was angry. Confused. Depressed. I ran. Far. Here...I know where my mother is now. She even lent me money, a lot. And an apology. That leads me to now. I'm over it. It's been a year. I haven't heard anything of Falcon's drug mischief. They must've found me. They must've...done something...to find me...well, that's that. Happy now I've told you?"
Dan smiled reassuringly, "much happier. I'll protect you. I promise." She put a hand on her shoulder. That moment. The warm feeling inside that killed the freezing cold on the outside. Dan and Kayla just stared into each other's eyes. They looked so deep, they'd say they fell...

One cold night, two cold pasts, one warm moment. Right then and there, they decided for themselves. They knew what they wanted. The space between them closed emotionally. And mentally. It'd been a week since they first met. But they never could've imagined how close they'd gotten in that time. And they both knew they wanted closer. Slowly, Dan leant closer, the eye contact getting only deeper and more emotional. Centremetres. No, millimetres, from their lips touching, a dark, leather hand was revealed from the shadows and hovered over Kayla's shoulder. Dan barely had time to move and warn her, he stopped moving and reached to grab the hand that planted a firm grip on Kayla's shoulder, yanking her back aggressively, "KAY-!"

Darkness. All that could be seen. Dark, dull, depressing darkness. The cold air and floor could be felt, and a sharp pain on the back of his head. Unable to move, Dan attempted to recollect his conscious and what happened before.
