Chapter 1

(Esmeralda's POV)

My mom always told me I was special but I never knew why. I was like any other 12 year old, I could swim, I went to school, I was bilingual, and I could skateboard. The only thing weird about me was that I had an emerald right where my belly button was suppose to be. All my friends thought it was cool, my mom said it was normal, but my aunt thought it was disgusting.

My aunts always hated me. I never knew why. But today was my 13th birthday. And my mom said she would finally tell me why I was so special. So I woke up and got dressed, I put on a  some shorts and a crop trop that said 'Today Is my Birthday' I always remember it being so baggy on me, but today it fit just right. I put on my black Converses. I headed out to the kitchen.

"Hola mija!" Said my mom's sweet voice. It smelt of pancakes. My favorite breakfast food.

I started to look for our pet pig, Rosita.

"Rosita! Rosita!" I called. Plump little Rosita rolled out of a cabinet. I fed her some pancakes, also her favorite breakfast food.

Right when I thought I would have a perfect morning for once my aunt burst in.

"Ya quiero comer! Adonde esta mi comida!" Then she turned towards me and said, "Hey you little piece of shit, make me food, be useful." I had learnt to not let her see me be beaten so, instead of throwing a fit I made her breakfast but, with extra egg.

I saw her disgusted expression once she took a bite. That's for calling me a little piece of shit, bitch! Said my sub-conscious I thought to myself.

She stood up to make orange juice. She asked if I wanted some I shook my head. She also asked my mom, she nodded. We all sat down to eat, if only dad was here, said my sub-conscious. My dad died when I was a newborn. My mom said he died of 'abnormal issues.' I had just taken a bite out of my pancake when my mom starting choking I stood up to help her but then she stopped. Then she just stared I checked her pulse, nothing. My aunt must have put something in my mom's orange juice! Cried my sub-conscious. I started to cry. I ran to my room.
