somehow
i ended up coming to you
perhaps out of pure habit
for i was always looking
always looking at you
the plate you were holding slipped out of your hands
as you stared at
a dead little girl of not quite seventeen
and
a tiny glimmer of a smile painted my lips
because you were finally
finally
looking back at me
tentatively
you reached out to touch my cheek
fingertips brushing the pale of my skin
i stood still
time frozen
and as your arms encircled around me
i heard your mangled voice say
"i'm sorry"
