"You used to dance?" Jace asked me. We were sitting in his large living room, his parents and sister were out of the house so it was just us.
"Yeah," I told him, "but, I had to stop due to my dizziness. I did ballroom dancing, you know, the waltz and all of that."
He wrapped his arm around me and squeezed me tight. "You know that prom is coming up, right?"
I smiled. "Not for months."
"But still," he said, "it's coming up and I want to learn how to dance properly." He told me and a lightbulb went off in my head. I got up from the couch, preparing myself. Over the months, I had gotten so used to Jace that I could completely be myself around him. I wasn't nervous anymore, I didn't shake every time he spoke to me and I wanted to be around him all the time.
I extended my hand for him to take. "Well, come on then."
He took my hand and he got off the couch. His living room was a big space and it could easily fit two dancing teenagers. "What are you doing?" He asked, he looked confused at what I was doing and I was trying my hardest to figure out the steps.
"I'm going to teach you," I told him, "but, I'm a little rusty so bare with me." I hadn't danced in years, it could've been a disaster.
He nodded and his hand fit perfectly with mine. I took his right hand and wrapped it around myself as I placed my left hand on his shoulder. I took his left hand and I lifted it up in place, it felt warm and soft and I loved touching him.
"Like this." I said, he nodded, squeezing my right hand. I smiled, looking into his eyes. "Keep your eyes locked with mine, don't look down and try not to step on my feet." I bit my lip, knowing that this would be something to remember.
He laughed. "I'll try."
"The guy always takes the lead," I told him, "And there are four main steps to the waltz. I'm going to move my right leg back and you move your left leg forward." He followed what I was saying and when he looked down, I took my hand off his shoulder and moved his chin up to look at me again. I remembered my dancing days and I tried to remember all of the steps. "Then I'm going to move my left leg to the side and you move your right leg to the side."
We did that slowly and I smiled because I had never taught anyone how to dance before. "Like this?"
I nodded. "Move your right leg back as I move my left leg forward. And for the last step, move your left leg to the side as I move my right. It's like a square and in between the dance, we'll move around a lot in a circle and maybe add in a twirl or two." I finished, trying to concentrate and we did just that.
"That's it?" He asked.
I smiled. "Yes, you're a natural!" We went around the room, in a circle, moving our feet along with no music. Right back, left side, left forward, right side. I felt him take the lead and I knew that he had gotten the hang of it. After a few rounds, I stopped for a moment, got out my phone and started playing 'Can I have this dance' by High School Musical 3.
I took his hands again and we started to dance around the room. This was how I wanted prom to be, it was magical and we never let our gazes drop. Jace really got the hang of it and he gave me once last twirl before pulling me closer as the song ended after three minutes. My hands were on his chest and our eyes met once again. I got lost in his eyes and usually, I never looked anyone in the eyes for longer than a second. I knew Jace was special because I could do things I could never do before.
The Hopeless Romantic finally got what she had always wanted and that was love.
It was silent and our breaths were heavy from dancing too much. "You're a good dancer." He said with a smile that glowed, showing his shiny white teeth.
