Meghan prayed that Sawyer wouldn't be home as Joey opened the door to their apartment. When they walked in, everything was quiet except for Hitch's toenails hitting the floor as he ran toward them. Joey picked him up and kissed his tan fur.
"Hi, Hitch!" Joey greeted him and Hitch licked his cheek in response.
Meghan stroked the top of Hitch's head. David took Chewie to Modesto with him, so she missed having a dog around.
"Joey?" Sawyer called from his office.
"No, it's Oprah," Joey replied.
"I wish," Sawyer walked out to the kitchen where Joey and Meghan were. "Oh, hi Meghan."
She didn't say anything, just gave a small but polite wave. She really didn't want to talk to anyone but Joey at the moment.
As if reading her mind, Joey said, "You can go on up to my room, Meghan."
She nodded and scurried up the steps to the second floor.
Sawyer raised an eyebrow as if to say, "What's her deal?"
"She's been going through a rough time." Joey kept his voice low. "She and Jimmy broke up."
"No, really?" Sawyer asked, surprised. "Weren't they together for like two years?"
"Two and a half years on Wednesday," Meghan yelled down the stairs. Joey and Sawyer's eyes widened like Oprah really did walk into the apartment.
"I better go," Joey mouthed to Sawyer, pointing up the stairs.
Sawyer nodded. He thought about apologizing to Meghan, but decided it'd be better to leave her alone for a bit and returned to his office to edit a short film.
Meghan and Joey sat silently on the bed in his room. Neither of them knew exactly what to say, but Joey eventually broke the silence.
"I'm-"
"Sorry," Meghan finished for him. "I know that your sorry. That's the third time today. I'll be keeping count for the rest of our lives. And you don't have to talk about the break up behind my back like it's some juicy gossip."
Joey nearly apologized again but caught himself before opening his mouth. Just then Meghan's phone buzzed. She had gotten a text from Kalel.
Hey! Are you busy tomorrow? You should come to the mall with me.
"You should go!" Joey said, looking over Meghan's shoulder.
Meghan smiled and replied. Sure! I'll be there.
Almost immediately, Kalel responded with: Perfect, I'll pick you up at 1.
Joey and Meghan watched Attack on Titan and reality TV for the rest of the night. Meghan's heart dropped a little when they scrolled past VGHS on Netflix, but she wasn't sad for long. She eventually fell asleep next to Joey around midnight. He got out of the bed as quietly as possible and slept on the floor.
