"Agent York, I must warn you..."

"It's time D."

When I arrived at the testing facility in Washington DC, I was a bit taken aback by the group of people who stood in the lobby. Fifty trained soldiers, all primed for combat, filled every available corner of the freshly painted room. The group was widely varied; some female, some short, some built like rocks, all obviously deadly. The room grew silent as a figure moved up onto the small platform at the front of the room beside two sliding doors. He was an older man with salt and pepper hair and glasses that obscured his eyes.

"Welcome everybody. I will save everyone the pain of pleasantries and move right along. Each of you has received a number designation. Where your number is called please approach the sliding door to the left and proceed to check in and testing. Don't miss your number and try not to do anything stupid." The man dismounted the platform and made his way through the doors to the right and the room filled with hushed and anxious voices.

I claimed a seat on an open couch and relaxed against the back trying to act casual despite the pit gnawing at my stomach. I caught a glimpse of fiery red and my eyes fixated on a woman half way across the room. As soon as my eyes locked on, I found my stare returned by shockingly green eyes; eyes that threatened to rip me apart in under two seconds if I didn't look away. Wisely I turned my eyes straight to the ground immediately.

Luckily, I was called relatively soon after that.

"Foxtrot 12."

I walked through the door into a sterile room and was greeted by a team of doctors. After thoroughly being groped and examined I was passed along to a team that fitted me with my armor and then I was sat down at a table.

"Welcome to Project Freelancer, Agent New York."

We were free to do what we pleased the first night so most us went out for a night on the town. We ended up at a club in the heart of DC, Club Errera. We mingled amongst ourselves and drank to getting our asses whipped for the next few months. People dispersed and I found myself all alone at the bar. I had pulled out my lighter and was mindlessly flicking it on and off when out of nowhere a hand quickly snatched it from my grasp.

"Hey, what do you think..." I started to say as I looked up and met the green eyes of the lighter thief. Oh, fuck I said to myself. It was the red head from earlier. My thoughts raced as I tried to think of something witty to say but came up short.

"What was that?" the girl said as she flicked the lighter on and off once and then pocketed it.

"Ummmm, nothing. So, uh, you are?" I asked with the confidence of a thirteen-year-old.

"Agent Carolina." She said and made it a point to drag her eyes slowly from my feet to my face.

"I'm..." I paused about to give her my real name and rethought quickly "I'm Agent New York."

"Nice to meet you Agent York. Well then I guess I'll see you around." She said and pushed herself away from the counter and disappeared into the crowd of people along with my lighter.

This girl will be the death of me I thought and started the trek back to the headquarters.
