I heard a banging sound that came from the bottom floor. I cautiously opened my door and tiptoed down my rickety staircase. With every step there was a prolonged creaking, which eliminated my chance at secrecy. Giving up with trying to be discrete, I ran down the stairs and searched for the source of the banging. Hopefully it wasn't an intruder, that's the last thing I need to worry about. I carefully turned the corner into the kitchen and saw Jack looking through the cabinets.
He noticed my presence and bashfully turned around. "Good, you're finally awake. Hey, you got anything to eat in here? Preferably kidneys, but hearts work too."
I gave him a quizzical look and replied, "Kidneys? What? No, there isn't anything here. Considering this was the site of two murders, I highly doubt any one is living here. Frankly, I doubt anyone is going to ever step foot in here again."
"Someone needs an attitude adjustment. A guy saves your life and this is the thanks he gets? I didn't have to save you at all, I could have let Slendy kill you." Jack said. He looked disheartened at my attitude towards the whole situation. I was confused, not angry. I just wanted some answers.
"Then why did you save me? My life doesn't benefit you in any way! Did you keep me alive so you could kill me yourself? Sorry to rain on your parade, but I'm not going anywhere."
Jack sighed and turned away. He seemed different than the first time I saw him in the woods. "I-It doesn't matter. .... We should get a mask for your face. You can't go around looking like that."
I remembered an old toy chest that we kept in the basement. I walked over to the basement door and something caught my eye. Over to the left of the door there was a large red stain on the carpet. Next to it was another stain, not quite as large, but still bright red. My parents took their final breaths on that carpet. Their souls still belong to the house.
I flicked the basement light switch on and watched the old lightbulb flicker. Our basement was used for storage and nothing more. Jack and I stepped downs the stairs. I scanned the room until I finally found the big wooden toy chest. I unhooked the latches and rummaged through the box. I found old dolls and magic wands that I used to play with. And at the very bottom of the box I saw a scratched black mask. I placed the mask on my face and looked in one of the old hand mirrors I had.
My red eyes still peered through the holes of the mask. Jack had a satisfied smile and everything seemed to be falling into place.
It was perfect.
