From Nelle:
Hey…Pierce rubbed the crud from his eyes, not believing what his eyes were seeing. His phone vibrated a couple of more times, indicating there was more where that came from. He lifted himself up from his laying position, his blanket falling off of his half naked body and onto the messy floor. The room had been untouched since he had last been here with Chenelle, the day they almost…
His phone vibrated again, seeming more intense now that he was fully awake.
I don't know what's going on, but I don't like it. I know you've been texting me and I've been ignoring you, and I'm sorry. (1/4)
I miss you. I really do. You never came back after the boss told you to leave, and I got worried, but didn't know whether to (2/4)
text you or not. The boss banned me from talking to anybody in the gang, even you, or he’d kill me. Raul told me he’s bluffing (3/4)
but I don't know… I'm scared Pierce. Everything is just falling apart… (4/4)
Pierce’s bushy brows furrowed together, and he stared at the screen a few moments longer, reading over his text. He was glad he decided to upgrade his phone. Her message would've ate away at his minutes otherwise. He turned off the screen and rose from the extra large twin bed he had since he was a teen. He picked up a random sweater from the floor, stepping over stacked plates, crusty used tissues and boxes, and magazines on top of more clothes. He unlocked the door to his room, opening it gently. A rush of cool air swirled at his face and feet, and he realized how hot his room must've been, aside from how it most likely smelled.
Laughs from Mel, Jeremiah, and Jayden could be heard coming from the living room, and he could smell the savory scent of of chicken soup. It was something she always made whenever they were sick, but it also happened to be one of Pierce's favorite meal to eat: chicken noodle soup with a meaty center piece of cornbread. He slowly sauntered towards the kitchen, first taking a peek into the living room. They were taking turns playing Grand Theft Auto IV on the flat screen TV Mel and Jerm decided to buy for the living room. Pierce would've helped, but…
He made his way into the kitchen, making sure to hurry on through so he could make it to the patio without her questioning his coming out. He opened the patio door gently and closed it just as so. The patio was hotter than the kitchen since his mother left the space heaters running. They gave off a nice reddish golden glow to the space, making it feel as warm and inviting as it looked. He sat on the loveseat closest to him and propped his feet up on the coffee table. Afterwards, he pulled his phone out his pocket, unlocked it, and sent Chenelle a reply. Call me, he said, then placed the phone face down on his thigh.
In mere seconds, she texted back.
From Nelle:
I can't, Raul and Shaundi are upstairs. He probably doesn't care but Shaundi mightBefore he could reply, she sent another one.
Trust me, I want to hear your voice again, I really do, but right now isn't a good time.
Pierce sucked his teeth, running a hand over his silk du-rag. He rested his hand on the top of his head.
To Nelle:
There has to be some place you can catch some privacyIt felt good being able to talk to her again, even if it wasn't how he wanted to talk to her. He wanted to see her. He wanted to see her glowy, radiant face, her mesmerizing hazel eyes, her caramel complexion. He missed playing with her curls, the way she sometimes snorted when she giggled, and how tight her rounded eyes squeezed together whenever she smiled with her pearly white teeth. She was gorgeous and he loved every living inch of her, but she would never know because it seemed every time he tried to confess, something or someone interrupted him.
