The first came out of nowhere and disappeared in an instant.

The pair had been hovering over Lily's computer at the police station, researching for hours to track down the latest supernatural threat in Beacon Hills. They had dozens of leads and had accumulated hundreds of pieces to the puzzle that wouldn't fit together. Whatever was responsible for the latest string of homicides was slipping through their fingers at every turn.

Then Lily switched to a new Google search, and it hit her.

"Stiles," she said as she flung her arm out to the boy sitting next to her and caught his shirt. "What if this isn't a person? What if we're looking for an it? Like a computer program?"

He glanced over at her, a slow grin spreading across his lips. "Like a bot?"

"I don't know what that is, but maybe!" she beamed back, feeding on his excitement.

"It's a computer program that automatically generates responses based on preset data," Stiles blurted and pried her hand off his shirt with a firm grip.

He didn't release her immediately, but yanked her in and crushed his lips to hers for a full second. Then, he dropped her hand and leaped from his chair.

"Lil, you're a genius!" he exclaimed as he grabbed his phone and the keys to his Jeep. "I've gotta tell Scott! Nice work!" He took off, his excited voice carrying through the station as he shouted, "Best detective ever!"

Lily sat rooted to her chair, eyes wide as he darted off. She heard the front door swing shut and raised a numb hand to her lips. Best detective ever, huh?
