"Lily?" Scott approached the detective and Sheriff in the waiting room, where both cops had been pacing for the better part of an hour. "You okay?"
Walking up was the wrong move, and he regretted it the second she heard his voice and went rigid, pausing with her back to him. He braced himself as she rotated to face him, her typically placid and pensive expression twisted into a murderous rage.
"Why. Wasn't. He. With. You. Scott?" she snarled as she rounded on him. "This wasn't supposed to happen," she explained, her swelling to a crescendo as she continued. "You were supposed to keep him safe! That was the plan!"
"Ease up, Evans," Sheriff warned as he stepped over to the pair and rested his heavy hands on her shoulders. "He's been in worse spots before. It's not Scott's fault."
"I don't care what spots he's been in before!" she snapped and tried to shrug him off. "He's in the hospital now!"
"And out of surgery, if anyone's interested," Melissa interrupted as she walked into the waiting room. "He's still asleep, but you can go sit with him. 203."
Lily shook Sheriff away and race-walked down the pristine, shining hallway to Stiles's room. She caught herself against the doorway and let out a breath when she spotted him. He was tucked into a small bed, the covers pulled halfway up his chest. His long arms were still at his sides, above the blankets and limp as he slept.
Her feet carried her across the room to his bed before her knees went weak, and she sank into the chair next to the cot. She reached out a shaky arm and wrapped her fingers around his hand, holding fast.
"Okay, Stilinski," she whispered once she had collected herself enough to do so. "I'm going to need you to wake up so I can properly yell at you for lying to me. You said you'd be safe."
As expected and much to her disappointment, Stiles didn't move. Lily sighed and leaned forward, resting her forehead against the cot next to his arm. After a minute had ticked away, she straightened again. She raised their joined hands and pressed her lips to the back of his.
"Love you, you prat," she whispered and squeezed her eyes shut while she battled back the sudden urge to break down. It wouldn't do anybody any good.
"Well," she said as she cleared her throat and opened her eyes. "I'm not going anywhere, so take your time," she encouraged as she rested their hands back on the bed.
He did, but the second he shifted hours later, he pulled at her hand and returned the kiss. A groggy grin slid onto his lips as he raised his weary gaze to hers.
"Love you, too, Lil."
