I downed a second drink, the first already shooting through my body. Music shook the walls of my skull and sweaty strangers rocked and swayed all around me. I had only a little to drink, but the fog in my brain left me feeling unsure of anything. Parties and clubs were not my thing. I felt sick. I had to escape.
My eyes weaved through the sea of people until they finally landed on the exit. I threw myself forward, pushing my way through the crowd. I earned some nasty looks, but I didn't really care. All I knew was that I needed out. The music was so loud, I hardly even heard someone shout my name. I didn't stop to see who it was.
I pushed open the heavy door and found myself in a much quieter, less crowded hallway, though there was the occasional couple making out or black-out drunk person. I headed towards the stairs that led to the roof. It was accessible and not very many people went there.
I climbed the stairs sluggishly. I wasn't drunk. I wasn't even tipsy. My head was spinning from the noise and bright lights and the excessive amount of people that seemingly had no sense of personal space. I felt like I couldn't breathe.
I made it to the roof and sat down against a wall. I pulled my knees to my chest and buried my face in them, allowing the cool night air to wash over me and refresh my mind.
"Y/N, are you okay?" A voice broke the calming silence, making me jump.
"Jesus, Zack. You scared me." I laughed sort of nervously.
"Sorry." He said sheepishly, squatting down in front of me so he was closer to my level. "What's up?"
"Too much." I said simply, nodding my head towards the exit door. He simply nodded. He had been my friend long enough to know I didn't do well in situations like this. He told me I didn't have to come, but it meant a lot to him so I did.
"Yeah, it was getting to be too much for me too." He sat beside me, putting his hand on my knee. "And that's saying something." He gave me a cheesy, lopsided grin. I instantly started feeling better.
"You don't have to stay up here with me. You can go have fun." I told him, though I secretly wished he would stay.
"Me have fun without you? Yeah, okay." He remarked sarcastically. I laughed and leaned my head against his shoulder.
"You're dumb." I mumbled, putting my hand on top of his on my knee.
"Maybe so, but you know what?"
"Hmm?" I looked up at him. He was already looking down at me, his expression had completely changed. His flicked around my face for a moment.
He opened his mouth to say something, but quickly shut it and averted my gaze. He hesitated for a moment before saying, "you're dumber." He met my eyes again, the goofy grin returning.
"That wasn't what you were going to say, was it?" I questioned. His adorable goofy grin didn't fool me. It faded slightly as he looked down at my hand on his. He ever so slightly shook his head. "What were you going to say?"
"I wasn't going to say anything." He shook his head again, wrapping our fingers together. My heart started to race and my cheeks felt hot. I felt like he knew I had feelings for him and did this just to tease me, because he did stuff like this a lot.
"Yes you were." I tried to take my mind off of him holding my hand.
"Nope." He met my eyes yet again. The lights from the city around us reflected off his eyes, leaving me in a sort of trance.
"Okay." I said, though I wasn't convinced. "If you say so."
"I do say so." He nodded. We stared at each other for a moment. I could feel something building up between us and everything in me just wanted to kiss him. I felt myself glancing at his lips every few seconds, and as the liquid confidence started to kick in, I felt the urge growing stronger.
"Y/N?" Zack said, bringing me back to my senses.
"What?" I asked, still feeling almost like we were magnets, just needing to pull together.
"Do you ever get this urge to do something ridiculous?" He asked, the corners of his lips tugging up a little.
"Oh yeah." My eyes quickly trailed to his lips and back up again.
"But you know can't do it," he continued, his smile disappearing.
"What's stopping you?" I hadn't even realized I'd leaned in a little closer to him.
"I'd probably fuck something up." He shrugged.
"Like what?" My heart was thumping in my chest so loud I was sure he could probably hear it over the booming music downstairs.
"I dunno." He shrugged, finally breaking our gaze. I watched him for a second before I couldn't take it anymore.
I used the hand that he wasn't holding to touch his cheek and make him face me. Before he could comprehend what had happened, I connected our lips, gently at first. He froze slightly before he realized what I had done. He grinned and tangled his free hand in my hair, pulling my face closer to him and deepening the kiss.
My two drinks surged through me as I found myself releasing his hand and climbing onto his lap. My hands went to his face, his went to my hips. He gripped them tightly as I parted my lips and he took the opportunity. His hands slowly slid down to my ass and he squeezed lightly, though I wished he squeezed harder.
Finally, after months of knowing him and having feelings for him, we were here. I'd thought about kissing him for so long, but I never ever thought it would happen, nor did I think it would be this good. The way we moved together felt so natural, like we had done this a thousand times. I don't even know how long we were making out, but when I finally pulled away, it felt like a lifetime compressed into a single fleeting second.
I looked at him for a moment, for some reason scared of his reaction. Like all of a sudden he would decide he hated me and would push me off him. But he just grinned at me and said, "wow." I laughed and pressed my forehead to his.
"Sorry." I blushed.
"Thank you." He said almost at the same time. I pulled away and raised an eyebrow at him.
"You're welcome?"
"I tried to kiss you twice and chickened out both times." He chuckled heartily.
"Really?" My stomach flipped.
"Well, that's just tonight." He sighed. "I like you, Y/N."
"I like you too." I said quietly, still in disbelief that the last few minutes even happened.
"How about we get out of here and get some chicken wings or something?" That goofy grin I adored so much returned.
"Let's do it." I smirked.
