~Safiya~

My fingertips traced an outline of a circle along the cold, wooden floor. I've always done that when Im nervous. How can this happen to me? My own parents betrayed me! They sold me into slavery! Turns out they're not even my real parents!

My finger moved faster producing a burning sensation on the tip of my index finger.

That's why I was always treated like a mule by my sisters. I was the youngest of 6 girls in the family, and I always thought that was the reason I was always left out. Always calling me ugly, fat, and worthless. I was such an idiot back then. Why would I do my best to please them every chance I got and fail miserably after? They always left me out of their fun, and my parents didn't move a single finger toward them. It was always me who they wouldn't believe.

As I thought of this, I felt a tear roll down my cheek and leave a drop on the floor. My hands clutched my knees as I buried my face in between them. I noticed my lip quiver and began sobbing. Why me? Why must the gods torment me with such a wretched life? I can't stop replaying the scene over and over in my head. That horrible scene.

"Safiya! Safiya!"

"What is it mother?"

"Come down here we need- we need to talk to you."

"Ugh, Ra." I mumbled.

"I swear I didn't do it, Ebony and Femi were ..... what is that?" A wooden jail cell was waiting in front of our house. The nasty crate was being pulled by two palace horses. A moment of silence passed as if they were expecting for me to know the answer, but I didn't realize it until a built, tall palace guard appeared from behind the horses. Why did the pharaoh send one of his guards for me? My heart stopped and my eyes widened in shock as I realized what they were planning.

"Mom, Dad, what's going on?"

"Is this the girl?" the guard asked in a deep, low voice.

"Yes, yes it is."

"Mother, you can't let this happen what is going on?" I wanted to hear her explanation for all of this, I already knew but I wanted her to look into my eyes and tell me. They've been keeping secrets from me my whole life and I wanted it to end right know.

"Mom, please!" I clutched her wrist, shaking and pleading for an answer, staring into her big, brown eyes searching for one, but she just simply turned her head aside and let go of my hand. A single tear rolled down her cheek, then more flowed following it.

I felt my eyes start to water, but I couldn't give in, not now anyways. My fathers voice spoke up as my mother exited the drama.

"I'm sorry Safiya, but this has to be done. I lost my job, and Pharaoh won't give it back to me, unless I give him a... a certain slave in return."

"No... no! This cant be right its illegal, Im a member of the family I -I cant just be taken away like that."

"Yes you can."

"How?"

"Because you're," he sighed.

"Because you are actually adopted." I turned my head in the direction of the voice. My mother was standing in the middle of the entrance, staring at the ground. She slowly lifted her head, tears stained her beautiful face.

"What?" I asked. She walked over to me and placed her hand on my shoulder. "W-what do you mean adopted?" I stuttered.

"I'm sorry we never told you, but it was for your own good. Please understand." After she said, I felt a massive stream of rage flow through my body and snatched her hand forcing it off my shoulder.

"How can I understand? You have been lying to me for the past 15 years and now your going to sell me into slavery for some stupid job? Why have you decided to just dump this all on me now? Why?" I felt tears pouring down my face, one after another, but I didn't care anymore. What was there to care about?

"We didn't want you to feel less important than the others, we didn't want you to feel left out!"

"Well it's too late for that, I've felt that way my whole life!" I screamed. It felt really good to finally tell someone the truth of how I really felt.

"Well, we were trying to protect you!"

"From who?" I yelled.

"From Pharaoh! I'm sorry Safiya, but he beheaded your parents and was moving on to you, but we stepped up and asked to keep you! He didn't want to let you go at first, so we decided to make a deal with him. We can raise you, but until the time was right.. you would have to return to the palace and marry the prince of Egypt! He's not just threatening your fathers job, but he's threatening our lives too. We did everything we could to keep you, but he won't settle for anything! Im so sorry."

"Alright ladies times up." The guard said grabbing me and pushing me towards the opening.

"Wait no, you can't do this Mother! Father!" All my anger bubbling inside turned into sympathy. I know they were just trying to protect me, and I thank them for that, but I am still angered from them keeping secrets from me. I felt mixed emotions inside, but I know, that I still love them. All I want to do is stay with them. I don't want to let them go!

A huge force pushed me in the prisoner carriage and the doors slammed shut. Only one little sliver if light shone through a small window with bars.

"Mama! Mama!" I screamed pressing my face against the window. But my mother was no where to be found. They must have fled into the house, trying to escape my pleads of help.

"No, please, help me!" I searched up and down the windows hoping to find them looking at me, but found my second to youngest sister Asenath peeking around the corner. Fear and pain filled her eyes. She was the only one of 6 sisters who gave me a chance. I was trying to remember all the fun times we had together, but a sudden movement made me snap out of it.

The carriage had a startling motion, and I fell backwards on my back. Turns out it started moving away from my house, and toward my new life with pharaoh.

I just laid there, on my back, wishing I could just die and get this life over with, but a movement in the corner of my eye grasped my attention. I couldn't see as well in the dark so I turned my whole body towards the object. Red eyes appeared out of nowhere and scurried towards me.

"Aahh!" an ear piecing scream rang throughout the cage. I scooted into a corner and buried my face into my knees. Why me?
