Rain had been called to the office and was walking down the hallway back towards her class when she heard Aaron's voice. She walked in the direction it had come from but stopped when she realized he was talking with someone. Even though she knew it was wrong, she hid and listened to their conversation.
"Dude, you can't keep dragging your little game on forever. It's obvious that you won, so just end it already." The voice belonged to Corbin, one of Aaron's closest friends. But she wondered what game he was talking about.
"I know, I know. I'm just trying to find the right time. It's been fun messing with her up until now; pretending to be interested in studying, taking her out on stupid little dates, all of it." Aaron chuckled. "That idiot girl is head over heels for me."
"I know you find it amusing, but you've been pretending to date her for almost a month now. That's a little long don't you think?" Corbin asked.
Rain couldn't take it anymore and revealed herself. The boys flinched in surprise.
"Tell me it's not true... Tell me everything you said just now is a lie!" She shouted. They both stared at the broken expression on her face. After a few tense moments, Aaron spoke up.
"It was all true. You were always so cold and emotionless, so I decided to make a little game and see if I could get you to fall for me and show a little emotion. It was a game that I won. I never really liked you; you were nothing but a toy. Besides, you should know by now that no one would ever like a girl like you." Aaron walked towards her and leaned down to whisper in her ear. "You are nothing to me." Then he walked away.
Corbin looked at Rain with pity as hot tears began streaming down her face. How had she been so foolish as to fall for his petty act? She should've known that a guy that had never shown any interest in her, would suddenly start talking to her and even find her attractive. Had none of it been real? Not even their kiss after their first date? None of it had felt like an act; he always seemed so passionate.
"If it makes you feel any better, I never approved of him doing something like this." Corbin said.
Rain looked at him and began crying even harder as she began to have a complete emotional breakdown.
"Aw hell, it's not gentlemanly to make a girl cry." Corbin sighed.
He walked towards her and wrapped her in an extremely awkward hug. They stood like that for a few minutes until Rain's sobs began to subside.
"I'm sorry he did that to you," Corbin said and walked passed her. "But just between us, let's pretend that hug never happened." He added before disappearing around the corner.
Rain couldn't take this. On a spur of the moment decision, Rain did something she had never done before: she hurried to the nearest exit, burst out the door, and sprinted home; skipping the rest of her class. She got home and charged through the front door, nearly running into Samantha as she stormed up the stairs. She went into her room and slammed the door behind her.
"Hey! Aren't you supposed to be at school?" Her sister asked and knocked on her door.
"Go away!" Rain shouted as she began crying once more.
"What's wrong? Why are you crying?" Rain didn't answer. "That's it, I'm coming in." Samantha swung open the door and Rain turned away to hide her tear-streaked face.
"What happened Rain?" Samantha sat down on the bed and pulled Rain into a tight embrace. "I know you would never cry or skip school unless it was something bad."
Rain wiped away her tears and told Samantha what had happened, repeating what Aaron had said word for word. Rain then proceeded to bury her face in Samantha's shirt.
