To say Jocelyn was shocked would be an understatement. She had just got back from her honeymoon and was currently overwhelmed with the information the clave just decided to drop on her.
"So you mean to tell me, my daughter is not going to marry the love of her life because she fell in love with his parabatai and wants to marry him instead?" She weakly asked for the third time.
Jia shuffled the papers on her desk before looking up at Jocelyn and Luke. "Well.... apparently so. We were asked if the clave would agree to the wedding of Alexander Lightwood and Clarissa Fray. The clave has seen no reason to disapprove of it."
She looked at Jocelyn's still slightly pale, confused face and felt a pang of pity for the woman. This definitely was a big shock for her. "They are not breaking any laws, and they both are of age."
"But to my knowledge Alec was ga... i mean dating Magnus. And what does Jace say about all this? Surely you can see something is not right here." Luke said looking through the folder Jia handed him. True enough, there it was, a request for permission signed by both Clary and Alec as well as Maryse as head of institute.
Jia shrugged. "That is not for us to find out. All we received was this, and the clave has given permission. But that is why i decided to inform you. I had a feeling you might be a bit unsettled."
"We need to get there, Luke." Jocelyn said standing up. "I need to speak with Clary."
Clary's POV
Clary stood in the library, her hand in Alec's. Her mother had sent word that she and Luke would be arriving at the institute. Clary was a bit nervous about meeting her mother. God knows how Jocelyn would take the news. Getting married was something they had never discussed before.
"Don't worry so much." Alec told her gently. He lightly squeezed her hand. She smiled up at him. She couldn't believe the clave had actually approved of their wedding. If everything went right, they should be married in less than three months. She was almost giddy with joy.
The past few weeks had been a blur. They both knew that Izzy and Jace were still looking for a 'cure' with help from Magnus, but they chose to ignore it. No one but they five of them knew about the spell and Clary wanted to keep it that way. Maryse and Robert had just been told that Clary and Jace had fallen apart and Alec had been there for her.
Clary sighed, knowing that the hardest person to hide the truth from would be Jocelyn. If her mother knew that they were under a spell, there was no way she would let them get married. Just then the portal began to shimmer and ripple. She watched as the figures of two people began to emerge.
Jocelyn's POV
Jocelyn had just stepped out of the portal with Luke at her side when Clary came barreling towards them. "MOM! LUKE!" she shrieked before throwing herself onto them in a hug.
Jocelyn immediately wrapped her arms around her daughter. "Clary. I've missed you." She gently pushed Clary's hair behind her ear. Luke dropped a kiss on Clary's head before going off to talk to Maryse.
Jocelyn sighed. She looked up and saw Alec watchimg both of them. He was looking at Clary with a mixture of amusement and fondness. "I need to speak with both you." She cast a glance at Maryse who was still in conversation with Luke. "Alone."
She followed her daughter to one of the empty guest rooms nearby. She sat down next to Clary on the bed. Alec had greeted her and gone off to train after throwing Clary a worried look which Jocelyn noted.
"So... how long have you and Alec been together?" She asked carefully studying her daughters expression.
Clary shrugged. "We started getting close around after your wedding. Me and Jace were already drifting apart," she lied.
"Why didn't you tell me Clary? You still seemed to adore him and I thought you were fine."
"I didn't want to worry or upset you." Clary crossed her fingers behind her back without Jocelyn noticing. "You were so happy, I didn't want to ruin your wedding."
"I see. So how is Jace taking this?" She asked carefully. Jocelyn really didn't see him as someone who would be fine with his girlfriend marrying his own parabatai no matter how distant they become.
"Hes... well i guess he'll accept it eventually. He should know that we won't get back together. I think he wants me to be happy." She invented. She supposed if Jace truly did love her, he would want her happiness.
"Clary, are you sure you're making the right choice? Are you sure this is something you want wholeheartedly?" She turned to face her daughter. "Getting married is not a light thing. Are you really sure you want to spend your life with Alec?"
"Yes, mom. I really do love him. I've thought about it. I don't want to wait." She answered looking at her mother. Jocelyn hugged her daughter. "Alright let me talk to Luke."
There was a nagging feeling that Clary was hiding something from her. She made up her mind to find Jace and hear his side. From what she had observed, her daughter had been genuinely in love with Jace during the wedding. Whatever it was that had happened between them, Jocelyn vowed to find out. And if Jace had hurt Clary, he would definitely pay.
Clary excused herself to go find Alec. The minute she left the room, Jocelyn pulled out her cellphone and texted Jace.
Meet me at taki's in two hours.
The reply came back almost instantly.
Of course. Is anything up?
Jocelyn quickly texted back.
I hope not.
