I looked into the empty fridge and groaned before shouting up the stairs, “I’m going into town, you forgot to get food again.” Sighing, I went and changed out of my pajamas and grabbed the car keys before getting into the vehicle.
The day was sunny and I slipped on my sunglasses as I got out of the hot car to go into the reprieve that was the grocery store. I made sure to grab the reusable bags that insisted Caine had to get, much to his chagrin.
I knew that it was a bad idea going shopping when I was hungry but I just had to keep reminding myself that I had a list that I needed to stick to but when I got to the checkout isle, I knew that some of the items hadn’t been on my list.
My eyes wandered over the magazines as I waited for the tall guy that had too big of glasses, check out my items and I gave him an embarrassed smile as the Oreo’s went through the scanner.
“It’s totally true about what they say, you really should never go grocery shopping when you’re hungry.” I grimaced before I caught the red tinge beginning to color his cheeks.
“My mom tells me that all the time,” the cashier eyes widened as he thought about what he said and he spluttered slightly and more blood flooded his face but I didn’t understand why he was so embarrassed.
“Yeah, wise woman. I can never bring my brother shopping, he’s always hungry.” I laughed as I began filling my bags.
“Sounds like most guys to me.” He pushed his glasses up his nose as he recovered and I handed over the cash to pay.
“My names Cecilia by the way,” I stuck my hand out to be shaken and I saw his eyes widen before quickly taking mine in his and shaking it weakly.
“Curtis-,” He stuttered and smiled before pulling my hand out of his sweaty grasp and picking up my bags from the end. “Curtis Henry the fourth.” Curtis’s voice cracked and I heard him swallow.
“It was nice seeing you Curtis Henry the fourth.” I waved before making my way out to my car but I had a slight smile on my face as I made my way home. I loved meeting people that were shyer than myself, it made me feel less socially awkward then I actually was.
When I came up to the street light exiting town, I saw the slope of familiar broad shoulder and the sable black hair that matched my own but like that he was gone and disappeared back into the thick patch of woods that signified where the town ended and the boonies began.
What the hell was Caine doing out?
When I got home, I pulled out my key, expecting the door to be locked with Caine gone but I the door swung open easily and I heard the slow oldies coming through the radio since we hadn’t had time to install the speakers yet.
I set down the bags in the kitchen before wandering into the living room that still needed to be painted. “Caine?” I called as I saw him sitting on the floor, messing with wires that connected the TV and sound system together. “Oh, hey.”
I was surprised to see him. “Where have you been?” I asked as I walked into the room fully.
“I’ve been fiddling with this damn sound system since you left.” Caine growled and I frowned. So he hadn’t been to town, I walked in closer but he didn’t see the odd expression on my face since he was too wrapped up in the things in his hands. “Will you just fix this? You know I can’t do shit when it comes to technology.” Caine growled and thrusted the wires into my hands.
“You have to turn the system on first of all.” I smiled easily as I saw my brother grip and a fistful of hair before standing up and walking out of the room to calm down. I laughed much to his chagrin.
I sat down on the lumpy couches that had yet to replace, and I stare at the ugly flower design that had once upon a time been covered in protective plastic wrap; I had taken much joy in ripping the shit off.
My mind went back to the earlier but I knew that couldn’t have been Caine but I could have sworn that it was him. Running a ragged hand through my hair before I finally stood up and went and grabbed myself to one of Caine’s beers before sitting out on the porch with a book.
After minutes passing by and all I could do was just watch the words on the page instead of actually reading them, I gave up and just sipped my beer and stared out at the woods before Caine pestered me to make his favorite bread. I just couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched.
