“Callum right?” I asked when I finally got my voice back. “What brings you to this part of the woods?” I asked with a raised brow as I took a sip of my coffee and studied him as he watched me.
“I had to come into town for car parts and I just happened to see you sitting here all by your lonesome.” He gave a gnash of teeth that was supposed to pass as a smile but you could tell through his cold eyes that he wanted to be anywhere but sitting in a dingy dinner with the cracked plastic seats with scratched table tops.
“How thoughtful.” I stated mockingly before shooting his hard stoic face a look of challenge. I didn’t understand why he would ask to sit down if he obviously wasn’t in the mood for company.
“So I take it you found your way home yesterday?” He asked and raised his sculpted eyebrow back mockingly. Yesterday seemed like it was weeks ago even though our encounter was still fresh in my mind.
I nodded wordlessly as I ate another full bite of eggs.
“You shouldn’t run so far off the trail.” He cautioned and I saw his joking smile drop.
“I’ll keep that in mind for next time.” I indulged but I knew I wasn’t going to listen to his words of advice. I loved the running in places that were untouched, it reminded me of the open fields that Able had use to bring me to when I was younger.
“Seriously. There are dangerous things out there.” His captivating green eyes bore into mine and I smirked slightly.
“There’s danger everywhere, don’t you know?” I teased before grabbing a piece of greasy bacon only to set it back on the glass plate, no longer holding my appeal as it had before.
I expected him to grin but instead I saw his full lips fall into a scowl, “What smart woman would run in the middle of the woods all by herself?” Callum asked and I couldn’t help but be slightly offended.
“Are you calling me stupid?” I narrowed my eyes at him and met his hardened gem like eyes without fail. “Think carefully before you answer, Callum.” Our earlier playful mood and I was left with a bitter taste in my mouth at the direction this had taken.
“You know I didn’t mean it like that.” Cal stated, his own green eyes lighting up with a fire that I couldn’t quite define.
“I know exactly what you meant,” I gritted my teeth before meeting his eyes that still held that fire. “Now if you don’t mind, I would like to finish my breakfast in peace.” He knew he was dismissed and I saw his hand tighten into fist but he still sat there, ignoring my brush off completely.
“You shouldn’t run by yourself. I highly doubt you could fend off-,” Callum dug himself a deeper hole.
“Highly doubt?” I asked with a look of disbelief, “Who the hell do you think you are? My father?” I shook my head before throwing a wad of cash onto the red table top. “Go screw yourself.” I stood and walked towards the exit with determined steps.
I had Caine, I didn’t need another testosterone filled male in my life, and I could barely deal with one now. My mind couldn’t help but think of Abel, he would never have approved of my running in the woods by myself, neither would Caine, but I knew that Abe had firsthand knowledge of the things that lurked in the green.
Deep in thought, I climbed into my brother’s car and slammed the door shut. Shaking my head, debating on what to do next. I didn’t want to interrupt Caine, I couldn’t just sit here and I defiantly couldn’t explore.
Taking a big breath, I pulled out of the parking lot and left the fuming Cal to stew while I went and parked at the school that I had found down town and sat on a swing in the summer sun.
After swinging for a while I just sat there, not moving and enjoying the hot breeze my skin. I didn’t know how to soothe the unease that seemed to roll through me like waves against the shore.
“He use to bring you to park exactly like this, you know?” A familiar voice said and I looked over to see Caine standing in the shade of a tree, ten feet from me but I wasn’t surprised that I hadn’t heard him approach.
I kicked a wood chip with the toe of my shoe.
“I know,” I sighed and met those blue eyes that were so different. “I remember.” I swung slightly, needing to feel air against my skin since the wind had miraculously stopped.
“We’re going to need to talk about him sooner or later, Ceil.” Caine said softly, trying to soothe the hurt for both of us.
“I know Caine. Just not right yet, okay?” I asked and I got up from the swing and walked over to him. I closed my eyes and just hugged him, not knowing what else to do but try and comfort the both of us. “Not yet.” I hugged him tighter and stayed in the hold for a long time.
I didn’t know when I going to be ready to talk about him.
