School crept up on me and the next thing I knew, I was wearing a uniform slightly too small for me, walking beside the evil sisters to the bus stop. I was so tired of them, they made me feel like I was a disgusting creature. I just wanted to go home, but I didn't have a home anymore. I felt tears well up in my eyes.
"Anne?" Kristina interrupted my thoughts, looking at me with a smile.
I raised my eyebrow at her questioningly, fazed by the first smile I had ever gotten from her.
"When we get to the school? Wait a bit by the gate. I don't want anyone knowing that you're staying with us okay?" She laughed, shaking her head and the others approved.
"Yeah good idea! I wouldn't want to be associated with you dipsticks!" I snapped, marching ahead of them.
"What's a dipstick?" I heard Penelope ask. Thick. As. Bricks.
The school was old, ivy creeping up the walls and huge windows looking over the road. A feeling of fear settled in my gut. I don't know how school works! What do you even do? If I tried asking someone they'd think I'm a complete idiot! I entered the crowed halls and tried to swallow the lump that was lodged in my throat. I didn't know what to do and stood frozen in the spot. I can do this. I can do this!
A few minutes later I ran in search of the toilets and locked myself in a cubicle once I had located them. Dissolving into tears, I leaned against the wall, trying to muffle my sobs.
After what seemed like ages, someone knocked on the door.
"Umm are you okay in there?" A voice with a Scottish accent asked.
"I-I'm fi-i-ne tha-n-ks" I stuttered, hating that my voice wasn't working properly.
"You don't have to lie, I don't judge! Let me in then?" Scottish accent insisted.
I unlocked the door and she squeezed herself into the cubicle. She was a short girl, with frizzy orange hair and thousands of freckles scattered all over her face. Her blue eyes searched my face and then she suddenly wrapped her arms around me.
"Hey now, its okay! Tell Aunt Sam what the problem is!"
"Uh...to be honest I've never been to school before...I was homeschooled all my life before I came here and I don't know what to do or where to go! Its just too overwhelming!" I gushed.
"Well you don't have to worry about that now! I'll show you how to do everything okay?" Sam smiled, wiping my face with some toilet paper "Come along! Let's get your first ever day of school on the roll!"
And for the rest of the day, Sam showed me the ropes, taking me to each class, sitting with me at lunch and waiting for me outside class. I was extremely grateful and thanked her over and over. Each time she said it was no problem and said she always welcomes a new friend.
"Oi! You never told me where you were staying!" Sam pointed out as we were about to depart at the schools gates.
"Oh yeah! Don't tell anyone, but I'm staying with the Winston's, they're actually my cousins" I sighed, grimacing.
"No way! Are you serious?" She gasped, her eyes going wide.
I nodded and shrugged and she pulled a disgusted face and said:
"You might be related, but I'm sure glad you didn't get their royal-ass attitude in your genes!"
