"I can't believe you three! Especially you!" Principal Coyshak points at Stephanie with an accusing finger. "First day and already causing trouble. No wonder you changed schools." Stephanie looks away from Principal Coyshak as she says that. I wonder what happened that makes her so ashamed.
"Principal Coyshak, if I may ask, why am I here? I had no participation for starting this disgrace," says Bethany like she's all grown up. I was going to do that but she beat me to the punchline. Stephanie looks over at me, asking with her eyes if Bethany is serious. Taking a big sigh, I nod.
"Well Bethany I'm afraid that the cafeteria supervisors saw you dump grape juice on your sister therefore you are not getting out of this one." She definitely knows about the big check that will come along telling her to keep quiet and unpunish Bethany for her 'crimes'. Bethany has never suffered consequences from teachers because father always pays them out. He did that for me too but I 'manned up' and asked him to stop. He was a little hesitant at first but then became proud of me. Stephanie looks triumphant beside me. How am I going to tell her the bad news?
"Someone, explain. Now!" Yells Principal Coyshak.
"Well we were just—"
"She called me something in french," Bethany interrupts me, saying it all bitch-like while tilting her head at Stephanie. "I'm quite certain it wasn't a nice word."
"Stephanie what did you call her?" Principal Coyshak asks. Stephanie doesn't say anything. She just looks away at the window, leaving the office awkwardly silent. A few minutes of silence go by before Principal Coyshak starts explaining the speaking different languages policy. I roll my eyes. It's really stupid. At my school they really hate it when any student speaks a different language, especially French because we're right beside a french school and it is the most common foreign language spoken. It's because the majority of the teachers and staff only know English and they'd like to know and understand what we're talking about. The stupidest and most ridiculous part of it is that taking a french class is an option here, same with Spanish. The explanation of it is even making Stephanie cringe and take eye rolls, which makes me want to laugh.
"I called her a pretty girl," Stephanie finally says. Though Bethany and Principal Coyshak do not look convinced. "Even though she poured grape juice on my new friend, I'm a nice person so I complimented her."
"You threw cake at me," mentions Bethany, looking at Stephanie like she's on drugs.
"Well I realized I wanted to ruin your prettiness so I threw cake at you." I want to give her a gold medal right now.
"What else happened?" Asks Principal Coyshak as she moves on.
"Bethany almost knocked a kid out by throwing too hard."
"Stephanie was trying to calm everybody down."
"Elizabeth made the biggest mess."
I'll be truthful; those were mostly lies.
Principal Coyshak shakes her head and sighs. "You know what? I don't care. The lunch supervisors saw and told me what happened. You three girls are not going to change my mind. You all get three weeks detention and two months of cafeteria cleanup after the lunch bell rings. I'll notify all your fourth period teachers. Not to mention cleanup in the cafeteria now. When the last bell rings you two Miles girls may go, Gradette you are staying for another hour. Does everybody understand?"
"But I have a job after school," whines Stephanie. I wince. That was not a good move.
"You ought to have thought have that before you ruined my cafeteria. Make it two hours."
