I make my way to the cafe early, around eight in the morning. I just couldn't face Ryder today. Lela's here like she always is, wearing an apron and circling around pouring coffee in mugs. The cafe is surprisingly pretty full on a Saturday morning.
"So do you live here or what?" I ask when she comes by to refill my mug. "You're always here."
"Basically. Now that my ex is only ever at my house now, I don't go home."
"Why don't you kick his ass again?"
Lela sighs and looks at me tiredly. There's dark circles around her eyes and it isn't eye shadow. She can read what I'm thinking and sighs again.
"Fine I'll deal with it, go home and sleep. Maybe for days." Lela chuckles tiredly, going to put her stuff away. I take a sip of my coffee, watching her go and embracing the fact that she's not here for once. I like her, she's my favorite but she's here all the time. It's different now that she's not around in the cafe. I wanted to feel that difference.
Now I'm here all alone with my thoughts. I haven't remembered Simon in four months, two weeks and four days. It's not a new record but it's a good length of time. It's frustrating how Bethany is not around but she still bugs me, haunting my thoughts.
"Hey," speaking of Bethanies... "listen I'm sorry. I shouldn't have judged a book by its cover like that. It was wrong. I freaked out. The thing is, I'm embarrassed and I am sorry. I hope that you can forgive me and be at least tolerative of me."
"Lela right?" I don't have time for this. I don't need her apologies. I craved her words it's what I wanted. She doesn't need to apologize for that. I don't think she wants to to begin with.
"Lela what?" Bethanie looks at me a little hurt. I take that back. I guess she really did want to apologize in the first place.
"So Lela didn't make you apologize?"
"No I actually realized how much of a bitch I was and wanted to make sure you knew that," she states. Bethanie looks different then the one I met yesterday. Today she wears a lighter outfit that makes her look like a friendlier person. I guess I misjudged her too.
"No don't call yourself that." She really shouldn't. All she did was assume the worst of me. The only title for that would be rude person.
"Well I was being one. So do you forgive me?"
I sigh, nodding my head. Bethanie smiles a little and takes a seat. It's kind of awkward now. Other people's murmurs fill the air. It seems like there's crickets at our table chirping away, mocking us. I look anywhere she's not there, Bethanie does the same.
"So..." I start out, trying to break the awkwardness. I don't know where to go after that. It's like someone has sucked out all of my memories, ideas and knowledge of how to speak to a person. Not to mention taking my mouth like how kids used to pretend to take each other's noses.
"I came to you to restart. So what's your name?" Bethanie sits straighter, leaning on the table, giving me her full attention.
"You've got to be kidding me! You don't know my name?" I can't believe her right now. She wants to restart and everything... I sigh. "It's Belle."
She leans back, pondering something. "Huh I thought it started with an E."
I ignore the sudden nerve attack, quickly changing the subject. "So who do I remind you of? What happened?" I'm expecting another scream attack but Bethanie doesn't give me one. Instead she leans back onto the table and starts talking.
"Her name is Ally. She's blond, skinny, has blue eyes, wears pounds of makeup and skin tight clothes, basically all the normal traits for a bitch. Then there's me. The only tight thing I wear is undergarments and skinny jeans. I barely have any curves and no friends around the school. Not to mention that I'm into girls instead of guys. I am the perfect victim for anyone," she tells me with no expression. "Since I'm into girls she thinks that I actually like her because she thinks that anyone who's into girls is in love with her," Bethanie continues, rolling her eyes.
