We enter a dark room, with broken pieces all around it. "I don't like this. I don't like this at all." Hermione said. "Where are we? A graveyard." Harry asked. "This is no graveyard. It's a chessboard." Ron said and walked into the marble board and flames light, illuminating the board and giant players. Me, Harry and Hermione come up with him. We walk across the board, towards the door. Suddenly, as we reach a line of pawns, the pawns bring up their swords. The four of us jumped and backed up. "Now what do we do?" Hermione asked. "It's obvious, isn't it? We've got to play our way across the room. All right. Harry, you take the Bishop's square. Hermione, you'll be the Queen's side castle. As for me, I'll be a knight." Ron said. "Phoenix you're going to have to stand off to the side because there is no other open slots." Hermione said. I nodded and walked off the board. I stood off in the shadows as they take their places. "What happens now?" Hermione asked. "Well, white moves first, and then...we play." Ron said. A pawn on the other side moves forward. Ron studies the game. "Ron, you don't suppose this is going to be like...real wizard's chess, do you?" Hermione asked. "You there! D-5!" Ron ordered. A black pawn moves forward, diagonal to the white pawn. The white pawn raises its swords and smashes the black one. The three of them jump in shock. "Yes, Hermione, I think this is going to be exactly like wizard's chess!" Ron said. The game continues. Pieces smash each other with loud booms echos. "Castle to E-4... Pawn to C-3..." Ron ordered the pieces to move and after each move one of the pieces exploded. The Queen turns, and smashes a piece. Harry, Ron and Hermione wince. The Queen turns again. Both Ron and Harry study the game. "Wait a minute." Harry said. "You understand right, Harry. Once I make my move, the Queen will take me...then you'll be free to check the King." Ron said. "No, Ron! No!" Harry said. "What is it?" Hermione asked. "He's going to sacrifice himself." I said, realizing what Ron was planning. "No, Ron, you can't! There must be another way!" Hermione said. "Do you want to stop Snape or not? Harry, it's you that has to go on. I know it. Not me, not Hermione, you... Knight...to H-3." Ron's horse moves forward, slides and stops. "Check." Ron said, swallowing. The Queen turns and advances. Ron breathes faster, clutching the steel reins. The Queen stops. Ron goes flying off the horse and lands on the floor, unconscious. I run over to him and Hermione tried to. "NO! Don't move! Don't forget, we're still playing." Harry said and Hermione froze. Harry walks the diagonal in front of the King. "Checkmate." He said. The King's sword falls onto the ground victory. Harry breathes out and then the two run to Ron. They bend beside him. I hold his head off the ground and slid as Hermione moved into my place. "Take care of Ron. Then, go to the owlery. Send a message to Dumbledore. Ron's right...I have to go on." Harry said. "You'll be okay, Harry. You're a great wizard, you really are." Hermione said. "Not as good as you." Harry said. "Me? Books and cleverness? There are more important things. Friendship, and bravery. And Harry, just be careful." Hermione said. Harry nods and stands, walking away. I got up after nodding to Hermione. I followed him to the door. We walk down a long staircase to an empty room with pillars around it. The Mirror of Erised is in the middle of the room, and a man is standing before it. It is Quirrell. Harry yelps and grabs his scar. "You? No. It can't be...Snape. He was the one-" Harry said. "Yes. He does seem the type, doesn't he? Next to me, who would suspect, p-p-poor s-stuttering Professor Quirrell?" Quirrell sneered. "B-but, that day, during the Quidditch Match, Snape tried to kill me." Harry said. "No, dear boy. I tried to kill you! And trust me, if Snape's cloak hadn't caught fire and broken my eye contact, I would have succeeded. Even with Snape muttering his little counter-curse." Quirrell said. "Snape was trying to...save me?" Harry said. "I knew you were a danger right from the off. Especially after Halloween." Quirrell said. "Then you let the troll in." I said. "Very good Volkov, yes. Snape, unfortunately, wasn't fooled. While everyone else was running to the dungeon, he went to the 3rd floor to head me off. He, of course, never trusted me again. He rarely left me alone. But he
