Christmas time came around that year. Everyone was celebrating with their loved ones, friends, or family. But in Seoul, one soul remained alone as her tiny steps could be heard echoing throughout the more recently abandoned park. As her boots imprinted the snow-paved ground, Min Hyuk pulled out her phone, observing the date as snowflakes rested gently on her soft pink hair.
12:00 AM.
The golden time... at least that's what she used to think. He had told her he'd be back in December at the same time, but...he never came through. He had stayed in America from the promise he made then... till now. Min Hyuk heaved a burdened sigh, shutting off her phone with a click. She shoved it back in her coat pocket and walked to a bench to sit down. The snow seemed heavier than before, and Min Hyuk was beginning to feel chilled. However, she stayed put. In this exact place, she had waited week after week for him to come back. Using this time of isolation, she decided to sing the song that emanated her feelings of betrayal.
Miracles in December.
She had never thought that she would be in a situation in which that song reflected her life perfectly, but here she was, singing the sad melody in an empty park, wishing for the person that wouldn't appear no matter how many candles she blew out. As she sang, she felt her vision beginning to blur but held back from breaking down for the sake of her own sanity. But as she continued to sing, the urge was harder to fight back.
Nearing the end of the song, Min Hyuk was tearing up to the point of crying. She knew what she desired most was an empty wish. But before she could allow herself to cry, two hands covered her damp eyes. Her whole body went numb and tears began to fall down her face in a cascading stream. She knew these hands. These baby hands that were small but let her feel a sense of ease at the same time. She brought her own hands on top of the hands that covered her eyes and clasped them. She moved them away gingerly as if removing them harshly would make it all go away. Slowly, she turned around, tears still blocking her from seeing clearly. But even without seeing, she knew that he had come back.
He smiled his usual grin— as bright as it had been when he left. But even then, Min Hyuk did not hesitate to deliver her message. She quickly got up, turned completely around and smacked him across the face. The situation was held for many minutes, Min Hyuk gritting her teeth and the man shocked at being hit.
With courage, Min Hyuk finally yelled at the man, jabbing a finger into his chest.
"PARK JIMIN, WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?!"
Jimin shook off his shock and turned to look at the girl who had just smacked him. He gently held his red cheek in pain but replied with annoyance.
"THAT'S WHAT I SHOULD BE ASKING! I come back to see you and I get smacked in the face?!"
But even with those words, he immediately regretted it when he saw Min Hyuk's anger and sadness being combined into one display on her face. She clenched her fists and rubbed her eyes furiously, not wanting him to see her vulnerability.
"You shouldn't be talking! You promised you'd come back by the beginning of the month! But I had to wait nearly a whole month for you to come back! Do you take me for a fool?!" she shouted.
"That's my question! You summoned me with someone else's song! You should've sung "One More Day" instead! Maybe then, I would've come back earlier, IDIOT!" Jimin shouted back.
At his words, Min Hyuk looked down at her feet with her hands still clenched. Mumbling, she said, "It was a song for you."
In the empty park, her soft words echoed like a siren on a busy day—clearly heard. Jimin regretted his actions even more now than ever. The only way he could think of to solve this argument was to walk over to Min Hyuk, take off the scarf he was wearing and wrap it around her instead. At his action, Min Hyuk looked up at him. As he finished wrapping the scarf, the twos' eyes met.
But Min Hyuk quickly looked away, not wanting to look, regretting having an argument with him. But she couldn't look away for long as Jimin took her hands in his. Although she wanted to pull away, she couldn't. Standing, the two held hands in the freezing cold. It was then that Min Hyuk uttered her apology but Jimin shook his head.
"I'm sorry for not keeping my promise. I said I'd be back but I made you wait for a month..." he said, pressing his forehead against Min Hyuk's. Min Hyuk closed her eyes, signaling a silent "No, you're wrong. It's my fault too." But with his words, the two silently reconciled.
After a while, Jimin broke the silence by jokingly asking, "Did you miss me my little MinMin?"
Min Hyuk pouted, looking into Jimin's eyes with annoyance.
"Not at all, ChimChim," she said, playing along in his game. Jimin looked slightly hurt but smiled, knowing what she was trying to get at.
"Don't play dumb. I know you missed me," he said, grinning from ear to ear.
"Hmph," Min Hyuk hesitantly admitted. After the two had stopped teasing one another, they looked caringly into one another's eyes. "I missed you a lot my little Christian ChimChim," whispered Min Hyuk into Jimin's ear. At her words, Jimin was only a slave to her aegyo. He couldn't resist the urge and hugged her tightly in his arms, planting a soft kiss on her lips. Min Hyuk laughed, hugging him just as tightly.
The two lovers shared a long-awaited kiss and hug in the empty park, just by themselves. Once they decided to go home, the two held hands, singing "Just One Day" in unison.
It was truly, to both of them, a song sung for you.
