Derek was now desperate for Stiles to take the lamp. "Please, have it." He thrusted it into Stiles' arms, looking down at little Ashley.
"Thanks." Stiles mumbled, running a hand through Ashley's thick, dark hair.
"I can pay for it." Derek suddenly offered, he didn't want to miss any opportunities to get back into Ashley and Stiles' lives.
"No, really, that's okay."
"I insist." Derek pleaded, and with Stiles seeing the hope in Derek's eyes, he nodded. Then he took the lamp and thrusted it back into Derek's arms. They headed to the till, Stiles holding a crying Ashley.
"Ash, please." Stiles begged for her to stop but she wasn't having any of it. Derek watched the two for a moment, placing the lamp on the conveyer belt. He placed the money into Stiles' hand.
"I can hold her...if you like?" He desperately wanted to get his little girl in his arms after four years not seeing her. Stiles gave up, sighing and nodding. He passed Ashley to Derek, an annoyed look on his face as her crying stopped. Derek looked haunted by Ashley and how odd it was to see the merge between him and Stiles. She leaned against Derek's chest, wiping her eyes with her hands. Stiles grumbled as he passed the cashier the money.
The three headed back to Stiles' car - which was still the jeep. Derek felt saddened to be watching them go. He helped Stiles by placing Ashley in the car but as soon as he shut the car door, she began to cry again. Stiles sighed audibly.
"She never stops crying." Derek stared into the car window for a long moment. This could be one of the last times he sees her.
"She didn't cry with me." Stiles stared into the car window too, not wanting to turn to Derek's, who was now looking at him.
"Yes. I noticed, thank you." Derek could hear the sarcasm in Stiles' voice and he watched as he walked to the front of the car, searching for something in the bonnet of the car. Derek followed.
"What are you doing?" He asked, watching Stiles pull out a roll of duct tape.
"This piece of crap completely conked out on me." Derek reviewed the way it was parked for a moment, understanding that the jeep had stopped working and that's why it looked like it had just been ditched in the middle of two parking spots. Derek watched as Stiles frantically wrapped duct tape to almost everything. "Can you try and start it, please?" Stiles said it as if it was almost obvious that Derek should have been doing that. Derek nodded, getting into the car and placing a foot on the pedal as he turned the keys.
The jeep didn't do anything. No purr or roar from the engine, absolutely nothing. He listened to Stiles' heart rate increase as he got angrier at his jeep, slamming his fist into it. Derek turned the engine off and got out of the jeep. He came to Stiles' side, reluctantly placing a hand on top of Stiles but Stiles pulled his hand away.
"You two can ride with me." Derek said slowly, listening to the sound of Stiles' heart rate return to neutral. Stiles sighed, he didn't really want to say yes but walking home was too long for him to carry Ashley, crying. Finally, he nodded and Derek couldn't lie, the jittery feeling in his stomach made him excited. Stiles slammed the bonnet of the jeep down and proceeded to collect his crying daughter. When she was in his arms, she didn't stop crying and started thrashing around. They headed to Derek's car, which was across the car park, with Derek holding Ashley's car seat and Stiles holding a restless Ashley.
The ride to Stiles' home was silent. All that had been said was that Stiles was living with his dad. Derek, of course, new where the Stilinski household was. So nothing else was said.
When Derek pulled up at Stiles' front, the silence remained, until Derek broke it.
"Do you need help?" Stiles felt like an idiot for saying yes but his nod came involuntary. He got out of Derek's car, slamming the door a little harder than he intended. Derek whinged a little out the sound of the door, but got out to pick Ashley up. She hadn't cried through the entire journey, and it pissed Stiles off that she didn't seem to cry when Derek was around. He picked the lamp up, pushing it through the door alongside himself, Derek following.
"I bought the lamp." Stiles grumbled, placing it down on the kitchen table. "You can put it up wherever now." Stiles was feeling a little sarcastic and he knew his father probably wouldn't appreciate it. Derek followed silently, Ashley almost falling asleep with her head against his hard chest. The Sheriff looked up at Stiles, letting his glasses slide down his nose. Scott came from the fridge to sit at the table but as soon as his eyes met Derek's, he was angry.
"What the hell is he doing here?" Derek said nothing, if anything he just pulled Ashley closer to him, feeling protective. Stiles turned to Derek, a look of dismay rising on his face.
"Oh, him. Apparently he lives here." Stiles mumbled, watching Scott go red with anger. "Hey, bro-" Scott strides up to Derek, taking Ashley abruptly from his arms.
"You lost the right to hold her after leaving her for four years." Derek growled a little, barely audibly. He was feeling defensive.
"Let's not forget why I had to leave here, Scott." Stiles stoped scowling at Derek and Scott for a moment and then moved to stand closer to both of them.
"What does he mean?" Stiles asked Scott, not really receiving an answer. "Scott?" Stiles was getting angry himself. He was tired from Ashley and completely drained from working, he had the right to be snappy.
"I don't..." Scott began, a look of sheer horror on his face. Derek suddenly felt attacked but knew what he had just done was wrong.
