After Carly was in Mark’s room, I went to detention. Morrison was on the computer and looked up when I walked in. “Hey, just take a seat.” I walked to the front row and sat down. I didn’t speak nor did he. I remembered last night, his face, his broken expression. When he told me he knew I was lying about something. I also remembered his hand on my cheek. His soft, warm hand…

“Penny?” He asked. I didn’t notice him lean back in his chair and look at me.

“Nothing,” I blushed and looked down.

“You were smiling, really big,” he patronized.

“I was?” I raised a hand up to my face and realized I was, indeed smiling.

“Yeah, you were.” He smiled that breath taking smile. My heart sunk to my stomach at the sight. “I’m sorry about last night though.” He admitted and looked at the wall. “A lot of people I’ve loved have lied to me.”

“Don’t, you have every reason to be mean. I have been lying.” I admitted and broke every FBI rule I could think of. Morrison looked at me this time. He opened his mouth and slurred. “But I swear it’s for a good cause. I don’t go around lying, I promise you.”

“I get it. They all had an excuse. You are no different.”

“No, let me explain. I’m protecting someone.”

He snorted, “That’s what they all say.”

I felt my anger rise. My heart was breaking. He didn’t believe me. “Why do you care if I’m lying?”

“Because you seem different,” he explained. “You want to know how I knew you were lying. I know for a fact Carly’s dad has one brother and her mom is an only child.”

“Okay, so Carly’s not my cousin. Why do you care?” I hissed. I was irritated. He had no right to do this!

He got up and sat on my desk. “Because you’re different.”

“What makes me different if I’m lying? Huh?”

“You are different. You’re a kind, funny, smart, beautiful young lady. That’s not a lie.”

“You wanna know why I’m lying? Someone threatened Carly and her uncle put me on this case. You know her uncle, right? Well, you’ll know he’s the Director of the FBI!” I mentally slapped myself. He didn’t know anything. He just knew I was lying about something. Now, he knows basically everything and Carly could be in danger.

“Oh my god Alex. I didn’t know.” He mumbled and covered his face.

“No, how could you? You just assumed I was lying for my own good. Not to protect an innocent person.” He stayed silent for minutes. He kept his face covered. It was killing me.

He moved his hands. “Does that mean you’re an FBI agent?”
