I was dreaming. That’s what I had told myself. The sky was a pretty blue and wildflowers were everywhere. I was laughing and skipping around. I was younger, I could feel it. A weight and burden wasn’t weighing on my shoulders anymore. My parents appeared, holding hands. I stopped skipping and looked at them. I raced towards them, to tell them everything. They slowly disappeared. I cried out for them. When they were completely faded away, I sunk to the ground and wept.

“Alex! Come on Alex, wake up!”  My eyes fluttered open. Faces appeared all around me. I closed them again, feeling a huge headache come on. I counted to five before I opened them again. “Alexandra, if you don’t wake up I’m going to hit you upside the head again!”

“I’m up, god dammit.”

“Atta girl, now come on. Open your eyes.”

“Zack, if you don’t shut the fuck up I’m going to shoot you. I’ve got a killer headache and you aren’t making it any better.”

He laughed quietly and helped me up. I frowned. “What happened?”

“You got hit in the head with a football; dumb fuckers were playing too close to you guys.”

I nodded then winced. “God dammit I’m going to beat them. Where is an aspirin?”

He chuckled and sat me under the shade. “Carly went to go get some. Now, relax and take a deep breath.” I did what he said and winced.

“Why are you here? Someone could see you.”

“Carly called me and I’m just a bystander as far as any of these people are concerned.”

“Someone could still see you Zack. You need to leave.”

He shook his head firmly. “Nope, Carly called me freaked out and I was just heading back to my house when she called. I was maybe twenty seconds away so I came.”

“Okay whatever Zack, if you want to get in trouble fine. Now just shut the fuck up and let me close my eyes.” He chuckled and brushed my hair out of my face while I regained my composure. Carly came back then and handed a bottle of water and two pills. Zack nudged me and handed me them.

“I’m so sorry Alex! I didn’t know what to do! I just…panicked I just called the last number you dialed!”

I smiled and closed my eyes again. “It’s okay Carly, really. You did the right thing. Tell me this, did you scream at those mother fuckers?”

She giggled and sat by my chair. “Yeah, I did. They were shaking in their socks when I was done with them.”

“Good.”

“Now I want you to tell me why you have Mr. Morrison’s number.”

I shrugged then winced. “Oh, were dating, didn’t you hear? Is everything on my body supposed to hurt?”
