1. THE LOST WORLD by Michael Crichton
A lot of Crichton so far, eh? Too fucking bad.
Everyone knows the Jurassic Park films, everyone's seen them. Not quite so many people have read the two books. THE LOST WORLD was actually written after Steven Spielberg, who directed the first film and obviously wanted to direct another blockbuster, urged Crichton to write a sequel.
The books do differ from the movies. The films are tighter and have different characterization. Some stuff that was in the books, naturally, isn't in the movies—and some stuff is found in one book but in the other movie. The second book in particular is very different from the film. Remember that amazing scene that starts the second movie? Yeah, that was from the first book. And remember Seinfeld's Newman, from the first movie? Remember that guy he met with for lunch—Dodgson? Yeah, Dodgson appears again in second book, but he's not in the movie at all. Quite a few of the characters in the book aren't in the movie, and vice versa.
In some ways, these differences made for an enjoyable read. It means the book was new and exciting for me. In other ways it left me disappointed, because the book is a bit slower than the movie.
But I don't like to compare books to their film adaptations. They're different entities, using a different medium of storytelling, and they're structured differently for a reason. Movies are compact, books tend not to be. Instead I go by the simple question: Did I enjoy it?And I did. There were lots of great scenes in the book, stuff that made me wonder why they weren't used in the movie—like the chameleon dinosaurs that appear at the end (aspects of this dinosaur were later used in the Jurassic World movie). And then there were things I was surprised weren't in the book—like the whole focus of the movie is about a new theme park in San Diego, and trying to take dinosaurs from the island to bring there. That's not in the book at all. I read that Spielberg was planning on using that plot for his planned third movie, but then he decided he didn't want to make a third movie so he added it into his adaptation of THE LOST WORLD.
Definitely worth a read.
